BB BP sticking point

JOKER47

Elite Mentor
Sorry if this question has been posted before, but I have been finding my sticking point during BB BP is about 2-3 inches off my chest. The bar comes off my chest fine, but starts to stick until I my tri's kick in, then it flys to the top.

My question is: What muscle is my weak spot? (Delts or lats?) What lifts can I do to help strengthen this sticking point?

Like I said, I apologize if I missed the posts previous on this.

FYI, this is PL style of BP.

Thanks,
Joker

im no expert at all, but i would say shoulders. it might depend on how far your bench stroke is though.

start doing some floor presses, and train your lats more.

I was wondering about the floor presses. Guess I will incorporate those in.

I have been hitting my lats pretty well the last few weeks, but I will look into those as well.

Thanks for the input,
Joker

i know you train wsb joker, but that doesnt mean your chest isnt involved on bench, i know becuase i had the same problem when i was training wsb, untill i started incorporating chest.

just think about it

(other than that, shoulders were my weak point, maybe your case too)

Maybe some of what I do and how I do it could be "considered" WSB, but I don't follow WSB closely, and haven't ever really tried.

My shoulders are one of my weakest areas, so it is entirely possible that you and Jeremy's are right. I have been working on my weak shoulders lately, and starting to see some progress. Hopefully, it will follow through to my BP as well.

Thanks,

Have you been doing board presses??? I would think that you should hammer the 1, 2, 3 board presses HARD!!!

But of course!:) 4 board press is the staple of my tri workout, and has been climbing almost weekly.

But, I haven't been doing 1,2 or 3 board presses. Which would you suggest for the sticking point I mentioned? Should I also incorporate the floor presses along with them?

Thanks,

2 Board presses....bring your lats up...lotsa chest supported rows...also if you increase your bar speed you should be able to get through the sticking point.

2 board it is.:)

As far as lates go, the excercise I have just recently found hits lats the best for me is the one where the bar is between your legs, palms away, and you pull to your chest? (Can't remember the name.) Is that what you mean by chest supported?

You MIGHT could do a set or two of 2 board presses after you speed work too...maybe...just a thought.

After speed bench I have taken some heavier singles with progressively heavier weight...adding 1 board on each set.

If there is a pad to lay on...then that is a chest supported row. If you are doing the exercise completely free standing then it is a T-Bar row...but are great lat exercises. I would choose Chest Supported though because it takes the stress off the lower back.

wouldnt illegally wides be a good idea for that portion of the BP? just a thought but i would think your chest, delts would have more of a mechanical advantage there vs. tri's in the latter portion. 1 and 2 boards sound good too, just a thought on alternatives.

Thanks all very much for all the input. I think I have a plan to start with. (Speed work, 2 board press, lats and delts) Gee, should be easy...*LOL*

Thanks again,
Joker
