He saw that face when he watched Japanese soldiers behead sick men begging for water, run over stumbling prisoners with tanks and split his comrades' skulls with rifle butts.

"Men died like flies," Steele says. "I thought for a while I would never make it."

Steele, now 91, is one of the last survivors of the Bataan Death March.

WWII was total Hell, what else can you say about it. Check out the casualty numbers for the battle at Stalingrad. I would have lost my sanity if I fought in that war. I had a great uncle that fought in Patton's army during the Battle of the Bulge. He drove a tank. The Japanese were extremely aggressive in fighting to hold on to some of the small islands like the Philipines and Iwo Jima. They would literally keep fighting to the last man.

Word. It's said WWII was the most violent period in human history. MILLIONS of people, most of them civilians, died violently in that war. Many of them chinese and russian. I wanna buy that book, the stuff he saw with his own eyes - I hope no other human ever sees again. It was god awful. I don't know how I'd have handled it. Thank god for America to finally end that war with a big bang. More reason to be proud of our flag.

Scary humans could do stuff like that to one another. They truly must've been savage animals. The Japanese were Hitler x10 or half of what Africans do to each other.

Somehow the Soviets are always overlooked as well. I suppose, they were our "biggest" ally.

They were the most brutal to their OWN people. Millions died in the gulag. I know phucked up. By the numbers, worst genocide in human history. Funny how the worst events in human history, are the ones most ignored.

The japanese were even more brutal to filipino soldiers. Something like 25,000 were tortured and brutally killed in those japanese death camps. And they even got away and never prosecuted.

I can't even picture 25,000 young men starved, tortured and butchered like animals.
