He seemed like a great guy...and the chair throwing incident was insane...
C,
Maris was a guy who didn't exactly fit the "New York" style of player. He was quiet, timid, and kept to himself. Showed little emotion. He was a player every manager wants bc he shuts up and plays. He was a player the press would eat bc he spoke so seldomly. I agree with you Cure. The chair, yes it was.
Tiger stadium? The old tiger stadium. Where 444 was the centerfield wall. That's a shot ladies and gentleman.
As for Canseco, poor guy. Ever see the movie with Kevin Costner, "For Love of The Game"? That happens to a rightfielder as well. Think it had anything to do with Jose? In the movie, the guy redeemed himself. jose is yet to on the field. Tell you a good story about Canseco;
My pop was one of the original Blue Jays. We go up every year for 2 weeks hang out, party, and bullshit with all the older players and guys who are up in the show now. This story is about 5 years old;
We were looking around the Sky Dome and found the gym. Peaked in and there was Canseco, who is a big guy. Not really big but decent size. Working out with 3 plates (315) on flat, for reps. A rookie who just got called up walked in the gym anbd asked Jose if he could jump in. Jose said, "Sure kid, if you can handle it". All cocky, shrugging his shoulders and looking at my father while saying so. The kid gets down, ready, asks for a lift off and BOOM! Right to the chest. Kid had no chance or business lifting that much. Jose picked it up, bar row style, and said, "Kid, looks like you bit off more than you can chew. Welcome to the show"! We laughed for a long time man. We still do today when we rehash the memory. Just thought you would appreciate it.
