bad planning

I have a question for those who oppose welfare, school subsidies & minimum wage laws.

Assume you have a 2 person family, both working minimum wage (total of about $25k a year household income). Because they are poor, the gov. pays for their medical costs, and much of their college. A few years down the road, they both graduate and make enough to support themselves.

Without minimum wage laws, they would make around $15k a year. With no school subsudies they wouldn't have money to pay for college (no grants, no loans, no state subsidies), and if an accident happened, they would never work their way out of poverty.

What is wrong with a little long range planning? All you are doing is cushioning people from the dangers of the world while they try to up their productivity by learning skills.

Or maybe people just simply have no desire to move up and out of their rut in life. So there they are for years and years getting federal assistance and money when they have no intention of taking advantage of it. I would think this is the realty given the ratio of college grads to non-college grads. Sure, some people are "dealt a bad hand" but the vast majority just make stupid choices regarding their personal welfare and future.

Man I was going to answer this, but it's just too late to think hard.

Hehehe... I hope you know that I am just messing around.

If I took this board too seriously, I would have an aneurysm by now...LOL.

You did post a karma thread...

Someone offer an argument against social assistance for those who are having trouble working their way out of poverty.

I will answer it tomorrow.

don't make social assistance more attractive than full-time employment, and then the perpetual welfare mommies start to disappear.

I know a kid who makes more money being on unemployment and working 2 part time jobs a few days a week under the table than he ever did working at his company. This is a computer engineer by the way....we're talking close to a few thousand a week.

Anyone working two under-the-table jobs would be making a killing (with or without the extra $300 a month from welfare).
