Back problems...

Hey guys/girls/and undecided people...
Having some issues with my back the past 3 years usually after the gym or heavy lifting (no I'm not lifting with my back I use my legs). Today I picked up my son in my arms literally 20mins post work out and my lower back went out on me. I'm only 29 and have been to the hospital a few times because of my back and all they do is give me drugs. Anyone have any better ideas? I can't take this shit anymore. I feel crippled and helpless now like there is no hope and this will always happen to me... could really use some help...

sell the drugs and use that money to get some better healthcare or something. because everyone sits in front of the computer with bad position, back problems are extremely common nowadays so doctors usually dont bother treating them properly. tell them you got these from lifting and they might be more inclined to help you.

what drugs are they? if theyre hydrocodone you might be able to sell them. you can def sell oxycodone and morphine for cash with oxy being much more popular. dont just go out to the 'hood' and ask some random shady asshole if he can sell them for you, you will never see your drugs or money again. you might decide against this because it might seem immoral its up to you. i dont know how much these pills go for because its been a while since i dabbled in narcotics

review your technique. id suggest doing assistance/rehab exercises for your lower back. stretch your back. DONT keep testing your back to see if it hurts. if it hurts when you stretch/lift back off and take it lighter. if the reverse hyper machine really lives up to the hype then it might be worth purchasing i cant give any comments on this but apparently its great rehab work. have you seen a physiotherapist or chiropractor?

Man i get some lower back pain every so often from work. Pulling slips are lifting motor heads on some cat engines. I normally go to ciapractor a couple times and good as new try it and see. I know will take a xray before even messing my back especially if i have back pain to make sure its nothing else (sorry for any bad spelling and grammar)

Noodles, bro, go to the chiro. I get weekly adjustments done and it does miracles for lower back pain. I've had hell with my back since I ignored an injury in boot camp, so when I finally got around to doing something about it I had been down at least 5 times for a couple days.

Started getting weekly adjustments at the chiro last year and haven't had a single problem since. It's only about 25 bucks I think, if your insurance doesn't cover it.

This ....^^ I find working as a carpenter up outta town day in and out really stresses my lower back. What I have found to work immensely is finding a good physio/ chiropractor. One who will teach you the proper exercises In order to help you correct your problem at home on your own time with just the odd visit to check progress/ get an adjustment. Stretch your lower back every day and invest in a foam roller. Or even make your own with some PVC pipe. I forget the name of the lower back stretches but the ones I liked were like a cats camel or some shit I forget the name of it. You bridge your back like a cat then reverse the motion dropping your ass and arching it pressing your butt towards the floor. Also get up on your hands n knees, and stretch out like superman opposite arm and leg "reaching" far as you can.. Do sets of 10. Last one and my fav, lay on your back.. One leg flat out. Other leg bent at a 90.. Bring your knee towards chest, once close enough grab wit both hands and pull knee into chest, focussing on feeling the leg flat on the floor being stretched outwards, or away from your head per say, do reps of ten pulling knee towards your chest then on the 10th rep hold for some time, you should feel your Lower back and hips of the opposing leg being stretched if done correctly. Hope this helps.. Ps incorporate these every morning and evening if you can and watch the improvement daily. May not even need the chiro.. Also if you can focus on core work, planks, and that kegal muscle that you squeeze to hold a pee back.

I was a glazier for 6 years (setting glass in skyscrapers) and that beat my back baaadddd. Now im a v.p. behind a desk and driving a lot, but i go to the gym and after about 6 mos of quiet, bang it pops up again... 29 yrs old and i have the back of a 65 year old... i feel like i walk on egg shells because of it.. its a horrible way to live... im not complaining or anything, but man i can catch a break.

ill try a few of these... see if i can figure it out... theres a few yoga poses that really help...

foam rollers def help, and inversion tables are amazing... i need to buy one

TB-500 is awesome. try that and see if you feel a difference, it has helped me.

you are gonna have to learn to not go heavy. what is happening is you are hurting yourself during your workout, but since you have your adrenaline going, you don't even feel it till the next day or over time it continues to pound your body.

also your job is contributing and your sleep is too. dunno what you do for a living but i know for sure the way you are sleeping is further straining things.

chiropractors work on the BONE, but do little or nothing for soft tissue or muscle spasms. acupuncture is a temporary fix, it can help with the pain but if you keep pounding away its gonna keep coming back.

stretching is important, learn yoga and do it after your workouts and before bed.

Steve is right about sleep, which also brings up matress type.

What do you sleep on?

haha yeah sorry dont sell drugs theyll land you in more trouble than you will ever be able to deal with. sorry for advising that.

but its true that if you just say you have back problems to a doctor in the hospital they wont treat it too seriously. youll have to really give them an incentive to give you a proper diagnosis because so many people have back problems.

Let me cautiously recommend strengthening your back with squats and trapbar deads while ALWAYS USING GOOD FORM! My back used to give me problems, but I've not had an occurence in two years now, and I attribute squats and the trapbar deads as to the reason why. I've even heard of guys with scoliosis pain that's been removed by a good lifting program.

This is also sound advice but proper form here is very important as its an easy way to also fuck up the back

are you kidding me? you are encouraging this guy to go and sell narcotics..... wow

i have problems with my lower back. "sciatic" is what i think it's called. got it from a car accident a few years back, and just like you when i go to the doc bc of the pain they just try to script me pain killers.

what i do now, to combat this problem, is to just adjust my workouts around my back. i can still do hyperextensions, squats, rack pulls, etc.

you just have to be mindful of what you can/cant do. what does/doesn't work for you.

Get an MRI done. I amspeaking from experience. I was actually younger than you and the treatment was always nsaids and some streching. I also had a 6 month old and could not pick him up.

After 8 years of this BS treatment, I couldnt walk 100 yards without my legs falling asleep and I would fall over no matter where I was.

So I finally paid for my own MRI and I was in surgery 3 days later. Fused L4-L5-S1. Took forever to recover from the surgery, but I will never regret that day.

It changed my life. I can do just about everything as before, with the exception of barbell squats. I am not sure if I want to risk that. I just use DB held at my sides.

Surgery is not for everyone, but it is an option if all else has been exhausted.

To maybe try and avoid surgery, buy a sleep number bed. I would sleep on the floor or put a piece of plywood under my side of the bed to get it hard enough. The sleep number bed you can find the best support everytime you go to bed.

If you want to talk to someone about the back sugery process, drop me an IM, I will tell you the good bad and ugly parts, but atleast you will have all the info.

Ive got the same problem. I went a few years with lower back pain and finally had enough and had an mri done. Results came back as a deteriorating of the cartilage of between the l4 l5. No wonder i was in pain all the time. Havent seen a specialist yet but thats comming in the next few weeks. It sucks but i still lift. Im not stoping, and i dont want surgury, just something i might have to live with. Will see what the specialist says i guess. Buti would def get it all checked out bro and hopefully its not as bad as mine and the previous poster. Good luckluck

I've been dealing with a back issue for about 6 months. Diagnosed as Spondylolisthesis Grade 2 of L4 & L5. Doc say I've had for quite sometime. I went to PT for awhile and have continued things on my own. I had a spinal injection (Lumbar Facet Block) a month ago which has helped up until recently. Hamstrings dont agree with deadlifts, and fatigue quick during hyper extensions. (Don't go past a Neutral Tilt). Leg curls are ok. So there are somethings I pay for and somethings I can tolerate. I try and do Planks 2-3 times aweek... Since it hasnt gotten too bad I want to try and stay away from the Vertebrae Fusion Surgery. But on the other hand if it will allow me to do somethings I don't dare do now (ex Basketball) it'd be worth it. But from what I've read that surgery has a 70% success rate, a long recovery, and could possibly lead to the same problem with above or below vertebrates.

Hope everything goes well for you. Your not alone!

Thanks for all the advice guys. From what everyone's saying, I need to go get a MRI done on my back. I am constantlyyyyy straining my muscled or the weirdest thing is when I've done bent over rows in the past, my back "pops" and then I get really warm pins and needles type of feeling just before my back locks up and then I'm out of commission for at least a month. Walking with a cane, on pain killers ect and I don't take pills (unless its aas >:) lol) it just sucks. I've done stretching, pt, different exercises, nothing seems to be a permanent fix. I've adjusted my form, lightened weight... Recently I stretched, then did 200 declined sit ups (broken up in sets of 20) and I was fine, until I got my son out of the day care at the gym, picked him up, and bang, my back went out...
I started lifting this past Monday after a month... Needless to say ALLLL of my strength is gone. So now I start back at zero. This shit is affecting my life and I need to fix it.
Now that I've complained, lol, thanks again everyone for all the advice.
