Avenge Sevenfold

i alwasy listen to "Bat Country" during my warm up routine to get me pumped for an intense workout.

they fuckin rock man
they're old shit is heavier, like hardcore metal instead of the new A.S. where as they're more punk/emocore. but i like both
the lead singer had vocal surgery before the latest album was released so he's not screaming all the time as he was before.

punk/emocore? These guys are closer to a tribute band to hard rock like gnr and metallica. Just b/c they have tat's and are young they get roped into that mess of "cores"

Reason his voice sounds so ridiculous is he used to almost purely be a screamer then he had an operation and now it's no screaming or he loses his voice permanently at 30'ish.

PS they rip live, go see em if you can. he will pull off all the sweeps in wicked end... I didn't think he'd do it live but he did.

you pretty much just reposted what i said in different words

New stuff is wanky bullshit. I can't stand it. I like the first one. The second is hit or miss.

i think they're new shit is their best, its something you can listen to just about anytime rather than just when your lifting or getting ready to fuck someone up

I don't know. I tried to listen to it twice. The first time, the vocals killed it. Even before the surgery, he had a horrible voice. The second time, the constant guitar masturbation was just too much. Technical ability can be impressive sometimes but at others...well, it's one of my biggest pet peaves in music. The guys could be quad tapping with their hands/feet and playing bass lines with their dicks at the same time but it doesn't mean they can write a song that keeps me interested, you know?

I think it'll hit big with a lot of kids that haven't listened to power metal. In that respect, City of Evil will become kind of like a Dick and Jane book for the new kids; an intro that everyone has to go through to get to the real stuff.

^totally disagree with you... these guys are one of the ONLY bands out there that are actually still writing decent songs that utilize technical playing...89% of metal = horrid songs, amazing musicianship.

Eh, I don't know man. That's your opinion and I respect it but I don't think you listen to too much metal to begin with.

I don't think they write songs at all. It's just technical exercises now with a bunch of cheese thrown in. All I really hear from people is, "Wow, that solo must've been a bitch to play," instead of, "Wow, that solo was really beautiful/tasteful/etc."

I just hate that. It's so cold and lacking emotion. It's like fucking a good looking robot. You'll bust a nut, yeah, but there's nothing on the inside that makes you want to come back. City of Evil might get some plays if I'm horny for wanking, but otherwise, there's nothing there at all that I wouldn't get from say...Blind Guardian or some other over the top power metal band.

Do you have any recommendations on what you think is good metal? The reason I like their new stuff more is I can't stand that unoriginal screaming shit that he used to do and that many many bands do. I wanna hear screaming guitar with someone who may be yelling but can still be understood. Kinda like old school metallica. Hard guitar plus screaming but still telling a story. I'd love to find a band like this

Edit: BTW I just downloaded a bunch of songs after reading that best metal albums thread and all of them except Brand New Sin had that generic pantera wannabe screaming that I don't consider music. So if there are any metal bands around anymore that don't scream like that, I'd love to find out.

Check out Blind Guardian in particular. Night at the Opera is probably my favorite power metal album. So good! Keep in touch and I can keep loading you up and trying stuff out.

I am exposed to a lot of metal bands through work and various acquintances but have limited tastes... there is too much aweful shit out there to sift through... every genre has it's shit but metal seems to have more shit being signed and distributed than just about anyone (other than emo post h.core bs) I usually download stuff u recommend...btw, enjoy about 50%

PS about avenged,,, i do find it slightly peeving that almost every song they have written on their last 2 cd's is in the same key...

There's a lot of shit in metal. A LOT of shit. I guess I have a lot of tolerance to weed through it.

Or I'm stupid. Maybe both.

Mercenary

Biomechanical

Into Eternity

A couple have screams, but J f'n C is the music and lyrical content are outstanding (read: Opeth). Into Eternity is similar. Songs are far less epic, there are screamy screams, but again, terrific musicianship, and plenty of clean vox. Be sure to listen to Splintered Visions. Holy shit what a good song. Fuck, listen to everything here. Sorry the Evergrey ones are .zip files. Don't know wtf InsideOut Music is thinking. :)

Check out Nocturnal Rites. Great riffs. Power Metal band on Century Media records. I think there are some MP3's on the label's site.

I'd like you to tell me ONE line from any one of these songs and let me know what it says before turning to the lyrics. Sounds like someone is being tortured. Thats not "metal"

i saw em not to long ago here in good ole bitch ass pho town (acutally tempe) not but the crowd was really f-ing young

Well first you've got th...wait...what? I'm going to have to call this one in.

Translator to music room. Translator to music room. Calling the translator to music room.

I think he is saying that the bands you posted are not 'metal' because he cannot make out the lyrics.

I wonder what bands he defines as metal then...

I really liked Bat Country. It turned me on my ear. The sweep licks with the harmonizer are cool as hell, and really take me back. I bought the CD, and was quite frankly disappointed in pretty much all of it except for a couple of other tunes.
The lead singer sounds just like the Donnie Vie from Enuff Z Nuff. As a matter of fact, I could swear it's him.
Never heard of em til now. They are indeed a breath of fresh air in the flood of all the bands that sound exactly the same on rock radio right now. I believe they will turn the current trends completely 180 degrees, provided kids can learn how to play licks like these fast enough. It ain't easy. Sweeps, and fast double picking weed out the suckers in a hurry.
