How can you present a movie about exploring a new world and not have it as cliche? it's all been done, like you mentioned 75th, in last samurai, dances with wolves, etc...but I feel this was a better representation in a more futuristic atmosphere....no one's trying to discover badlands or forrests anymore, people want to see what's out there, in space...
That's true, and Cameron definitely succeeded with regards to transporting us to a place weve not experienced before. My point is that, aside from how awesome and fully realized everything is visually, I could give a shit about everything else. Did I care when Sigourney Weaver died? Was I surprised when Giovanni Ribisi's character did a 180 and realized how wrong he was for being a corporate stooge? Contrast that with the original Star Wars where your jaw dropped when Obi Wan died via lightsaber or when Han responding to Leia's "I love you" was "I know" made you choke up a bit as he was frozen in carbonite (Boba Fett ftw!).
There's a difference between a spectacle and a good film. Star Wars was both whereas Cameron only focused on the former.
