Austin Police officer fired for Racist behavior

One more thing........the day that cops stop "profiling" i.e. "playing the odds" is the day I will feel incredibly unsafe and will move to Montana (or Idaho).

By noting that someone of some ethnic origin, driving a vehicle not normally associated with that ethnic origin, in an area not know for that ethnic origin, at a time of night where most folks in that area are at home or in bed, acting suspicious and then refusing to stop, causing an accident, having drugs on them. Gee, I think du bad men were caught.

That is no more racial profiling than me observing two white dudes with hammerhead side burns and tatoos of swastikas, driving around in a black neighborhood at 2 am, in a 2000 pontiac firebird. Hmmm, does that sound suspicious? Oh, I did attempt to pull them over based on my reasonable suspicion of wrong doing (based on my years of experience as an officer and my familiarity with the neighborhood)

A) I am white and pull them over. They have illegal
weapons and drugs. Have I violated their civil rights?

B) I am black and pull them over. They have illegal
weapons and drugs. Have I violated their civil rights?

c) I am Jewish and pull them over. They have illegal
weapons and drugs. Have I violated their civil rights?

Now of course the answer to A is praise to me for doing my job. Especially from the black community and not much out cry from the Arians.

Of course from B, I recieve tons of praise from the black community for a job well done and the Arian boys file claims that they were racially profiled. The complaint most likely will go nowhere. The officer will keep his job.

In fact to my knowledge I have never once heard of a racial profiling case against a black officer nor have I ever heard of any racial crime committed by a black against a white. Hmmmmmmmmm.

The answer to C is praise from the black community, and complaints filed against the me for being Jewish (well the complaint is not about being Jewish, but about me profiling them illegally)

Something all seem to forget. I can be racist against my own race, as well as against another.

One time I pulled over a white dude in a black neighborhood, because he had driven around the area for about 20 minutes without stopping. So I pulled him over to see if he was "lost" and needed help. He let me have his license, found he had warrants, also had a child (2 year old) that we had his sister come and pick up. Turns out he was driving around looking for a crack house. I profiled the hell out of him. White dude, black neighborhood, 2 am in the morning, (he was driving a p.u., typical redneck vehicle) He had no vehicle malfunctions, committed no traffic violations. But based on my experience with that neighborhood and years as a police officer I could articulate reasonable suspicion. Besides, he looke lost and I was just trying to help him get "unlost"

That would be considered racial profiling, by every standard in the book. (oh wait, I was white too, sorry)

so true Chesty, what good are police officers if they don't act on their suspicions. So many people would get away scott free.

In High school, a bunch a friends packed into my car. We had a plan to egg this girls house. It was about 3am, and were pulled over in the neighborhood because the cop thought we were up to no good, well, he was right. He had no other reason for pulling us over. The cop was black, but WE DIDN'T RAISE HELL OVER IT BECAUSE WE WERE UP TO NO GOOD AND HE WAS JUSTIFIED IN PULLING US OVER.

Okay

I have heard the point made about why cops do what they do when situations arise when something is amiss...Chesty....I'm not interested in the obvious cases....I keep hearing this talk about minorities not driving what's not associated with their ethnic origin...in Texas....and other places I have lived and worked, minorities drive Mercedes, Jags, 4x4 dualies, Lexus, Jeeps, and all kinds of cars. Maybe in some hick town somewhere, maybe that's not the case....but anybody who says differently is full of shit...I see this everyday on the expressway, and in neighborhoods, at restaurants...etc. I do not venture into degenerate neighborhoods (trailer parks, projects, ghettos, etc) so I don't know exactly what is driven in those places...but I have friends that have been pulled over BECAUSE of what they drive, refused to have their car searched, and watched the cops call in a K-9 unit and have their vehicle searched while they had to sit either on the sidewalk, or ground, or assume a humiliating position of deference during the search. I'm talking about successful business owners, corporate leaders and decent people. No drugs, or no warrants to be found. Now you may not want to believe this, but this has happened more than once to a lot of them. Once again, because I have yet to hear anyone acknowledge that this happens, I'm led to believe that NONE of you have ever had this happen....If you have, please share your experience here now. I believe that if ANY of you had experienced this a few times,You'd be PISSED just like they were. And as I mentioned before, Cops do lie under oath. All of them are not like you Chesty, and unless somebody has damning evidence against them, they don't get caught. I'm interested to see how many people this has happened to..(No, it hasn't happened to me), but to a few former co-workers, and acquaintances. And if anybody thinks this crap doesn't happen, I have a documented article to post to verify that it does. :D

This, along with many other forms of "discrimination" has happend to me. This is another reason why I think all of this is bullshit.

99% of the time, I'm driving home at 3am or later. One time I was returning from a friends house, and was pulled over by 2 patrol cars. They asked me to exit the vehicle, and told me that my car matched a description of a car involved in a burglary. They searched it for about 5 minutes, then just took off. Said something like sorry for the incovenience.

Now If I were black, I could very easily blame the entire search on the color of my skin. But luckily I'm not very self concious about my skin color.

We have done it. You are allowed to detain an individual for a reasonable amount of time (about 45 minutes) A dog can be used to search a vehicle. That is it can sniff if for evidence. If it hits on something then you are constitutionally allowed to now physically search the vehicle for the cause of the hit.

Dogs cannot be used to search people period.

You can be patted down and you cannot refuse. It is called a terry pat down. (not a search, cause you can't go into the pockets and such unless you have permission)

Now, you can be searched , prior to arrest, exigent circumstances and officer safety.

We did this to lots of white people.

No one here is denying that blacks don't drive jaguars, mercedes, porches, etc. But that is just one piece of the picture.

When the total picture is assembled then you may or may not be able to prove reasonable suspicion.

I have pulled over white kids driving bmw's, because they:
A)didn't appear to be old eough to drive
B)certainly didn't appear to be able to afford a bmw
C)it was 1 in the morning, when any reasonable parent would have their kid in the house and not roaming the streets
D)Because my instinct told me they were up to know good.

Had I missed? Nope.

We had a call about a shooting one night, as we drove into the neighborhood, a 1970's 4 door chevy caprice with 4 black people in it came rolling out of the neighborhood, we pulled it over, because of the call searched the vehicle (we are allowed to do that) A crime had just been committed and we had reasonable suspicion enough to allow us to search for the fruits of the crime, in this case weapons) we found drugs, and stuff to sell drugs (no weapons) they went to jail.

Oh by the way, the deputy that pulled them over was black and me and my partner were white.

Apparently my wording is misleading, I'm asking about accounts of infrequent/frequent stops and searches (k-9), not one time accounts of incidents of 3 am stops....I fully understand cops exercising that profiling technique at certain times in response to a crime or crimes that have allegedly been committed. With respect to you being discriminated Naty, that's not what I'm asking about. The people I know have experienced this during the day....morning....not early morning incidents. Now, if you cannot recount anything of this nature, obviously it hasn't happened to you.....which doesn't mean it doesn't happen, or should be brushed off as though the people who it has happened to are liars are deserved it. No law-abiding citzen DESERVES that kind of HARASSMENT. example: You and your better half are on your way to lunch, or dinner and a movie....You look in your rearview mirror and see/hear siren of a patrol car. You know you aren't speeding, haven't broken any vehicular laws, so you pull over....the officer comes to the car asks for the license, etc. Does his thing, comes back to the car, and asks you and your wife to step out. You step out, you ask what is the problem, you don't get an answer or if you do it's a confrontational one. You are questioned about drugs, etc being in the car....of course you know there aren't any.....so either you refuse, or you let him search the car
He calls a K-9 unit, they come and run the dog(s) thru the car, nothing is found. You ask for an explanation, you get none. You are told to get back in your car...you can go now. Like I said, this does happen, and I have had cops (local) that I worked out with tell me they have done this routinely. I have listened to co-workers tell me this has happened, more than once..(minority) Asians, Mexican, Black, African, and Arabic. Now, in reference to your comment about being black....and the skin color thing, I'd like to hear how you would handle this happening more than ONCE......I can't get an account of it actually happening...why? Because it "doesn't happen"or it didn't happen to you. It didn't happen to me.....but to hear it from both sides means there is some unecessary Shit going on, and apparently too many people are willing to turn a blind eye to the facts. I have the same thing you used to start this thread....proof of wrong and immoral judgement.....and since there are so many comments about reverse discrimination, I believe that ALL angles and sides should be discussed. It is these kinds of seeds of ignorance that have been sown into society.
That the city, state, and fed governments will not overstep/ignore procedure and do wrongful acts. They obviously disregard policies at the highest level, and because of the media, we know and follow that. But at our level, there seems to be no acknowledgement that there is/has been blatant illegal incidents going on everyday, and too many people are willing to cover it up, or look the other way, or deflect the blame from where it should be.
