AS related acne question

wyst

New member
I've looked on the boards, but I couldn't find this one particularly answered:

If you pick up acne from AS (including cystic acne) is this one of the sides that you're stuck with forever, or does it tend to subside eventually a while after you go off your cycle?

Great -- good to hear!

Thanks bikinimom.

Yes NubianBeauty, I have thought of posting there, but they don't seem particularly friendly to women over there. Sometimes I'm in the mood for posting threre, sometimes not.

Yes, is does clear up eventually. I still have some of mine from way back in June, but it's finally going away after a visit to the dermatoligist. I tried everyhtring but I think I was irritating it more so of course I broke out more.

He recommended to wash my face with baby shampoo and of course gave me some topical and antibiotics to take.

Ive tried a few things for my break outs, believe it or not Oxypads and shower gel are working for me.........guess you have to try different things and see what works for you.
Thanks CherryPie for the baby shampoo idea.

Very cool

Thanks for all the answers, everybody, very encouraging.

Natglutes -- where've you been? Haven't seen you on here in a while. Hope everything's okay -- I missing reading all your updates!

Wyst,

I've had a problem with acne most of my adult life (and I haven't used any AS). It was pretty bad about 12 years ago -cystic acne (the really big zits) and I went on Accutane. That worked wonders and kept me zit free about 5 years. After that I just had periodic flair ups.

Just this past year it started to get bad enough that I was considering the Accutane again. I've used every acne rememdy known to dermatologists (oral and topical).

It was from this board that I learned about Pantothenic Acid, which is actually vitamin B5. I decided to give it a try, because the side effects of Accutane are pretty bad.

Once I got my dosage high enough, IT WORKED! Currently I use about 8 grams a day, broken down into smaller doses throughout the day. I was very lucky to find a store that stocks the 1000mg pills (1000mg = 1 gram), so I don't have to take so many pills.

My skin has never been better. There is not a zit on it! :D It's certainly worth a try. Read this very informative post by Jakethemus for more info on B5 and why it works:

FF -- very cool! I'll give it a try now, cos I already get flare-ups.

About the accutane -- how bad were your sides from that. I had a gf who took it, and her hair got really thin. A lot of it came back after, but not all. I'm a little worried about nuking my hair with AS and accutane at the same time. I guess I could take the accutane after though...

Wyst,

The side effects I got from Accutane were EXTREME skin dryness, both inside and out. I'd itch all over my body, the corners of my lips were always cracked and bleeding, my nose felt so dry inside I was always having to dab A & D ointment up in there with Q-tips. I don't remember any hair loss, but my scalp definitely itched. Sometimes I would ache all over.

When I did Accutane, it was done for a 5 month cycle. You had to have a blood test every few weeks to check your liver. Then you had to stay off for a certain period before going on again if you needed it. One cycle worked for me, but it really is a VERY strong drug.

Guess I never really answered the "where" :o

You can get it anywhere you get other vitamins. I get mine at a local natural foods grocery, because it's the only place I've found the 1000mg pills. I get my flaxoil there too. It's in the section with the other B vitamins. Usually the label will say Pantothenic acid-B5.

Thanks for the info, FF -- didn't see your answer til now, I am such a space case sometimes! Much appreciated.

thank you sweetie! :) And what proactiv products r u using???

Not sure if you're asking me...:)

I haven't used ProActive. I did order something else off the tele -can remember what it was called, but Pat Boone was pushing it. It did not work for me. They gave me a refund.

I have read other posts on the board about Proactiv and people do seem to like it, so it might be worth a shot for you.

Hi FF, did the B5 clear up old acne scars, or just prevents new breakouts? I ask because I have acne scars on my back that I need to get rid of and I've tried Cocoa butter, but it hasn't worked.:(

The B5 mostly helps prevent new acne. It also makes the pores smaller. As far as existing scars, if you mean scars like pitting, it's probably not much help for that if any. For small pitting, I've had good results from microdemabrasion and glycolic acid (or similar) peels.

Of course even with those, the improvement is gradual, because each time you do it only takes off a few layers of skin. If you have some really deep pits, you might want to look into the real dermabrasion, laser resurfacing or a stronger peel.

If your scars are just flat red spots left after the zit pops, the B5 does seem to help that - I think the B5 sort of speeds up the healing process.

I've had a serious case of acne when I was younger, my doc gave me roacutan which helped a lot... but since I began juice'n it all came back which is kinda unpleasent, guess I'll go to my doc and have him give me some more roa when my next cycle is over. The roa thing is kinda though on the liver so it might be stupid to juice while taking it!

why is it that some people get acne scars and some don't? I do, but my boyfriend doesn't. He had really bad acne as a teen and then took accutane, and now has virtually no scars. I get em, though not too bad. He is irish and fair, and I am Japanese and yellow.

Any idea?

If you try to pop your zits, this can make you more likely to have scars. The pressure from trying to pop it sometimes pushes the plug (what's clogging your pore) down deeper where it festers even more, meaning you probably pick at even more. Sometimes I can't help myself, a zit will be driving me crazy and I start picking at it. There is nothing as satisfying as popping a zit and have it hit the mirror :) sweet relief! But it's a bad thing to do. Even if it doesn't scar, it leaves a red spot for a long time.

I've had acne since the age of 12, 15 years later it's still there. It's mainly genetics but it does mean my skin will not age much due to it's oilyness.

The best thing I have used is Dalacin T topical anitbiotic lotion which prevents formation.

At the moment I have a patch of what looks like acne on my face but I think it is an allergic reaction caused by a new brand of soap.

I don't think the AS is causing it because my back and shoulders are clear and the lumps on my face have neither come to a head or gone down in 6 weeks - it has taken me this long to realise what it is and what is causing it.

i have now lost my appetite. :) i think it was fitfossil's graphics that did me in.

good luck everyone and happy healings! :)
