Arnold's Real Training

Nelson,
How did Arnold REALLY train?? I've read on Don Lemmon's site that he secretly did HIT. Not sure about that. I always wished I could find out how he really trained.
Any input? Thanks in advance...

I think bodybuilders will often write up a routine that they recommend, but in reality they do something quite different.

As for Arnold, he apparently did many sets, but I don't think he trained to failure very often. High volume + low intensity can build muscle on some guys I guess.

Mike_Rojas - is that you in your avatar ?

Yeah, I'm a 13 year old rapper smoking a doobie. :p

No, actually it's a screen shot from a video Pwr_Machine posted. I'm going to change it because everyone thinks its me :)

I must be honest. . .

I find that kid in Mike's avatar to be provocative.

That kid is a born BFS. . .and will have a heart attack at 35.

from what i have read, arnold built most of his mass and strength while he was still in austria, before he ever came to 'kaleefornya'. he trained heavy on the compound excercises and did not concern himself with symmetry and proportion. he competed as a powerlifter and according to franco columbu, deadlifted 700 pds. once here, the guv refined his physique and made a few dollars in real estate.

VOLUME!!!

Arnold trained with volume we could only dream of... If we were able to spend all day devoting our life to bodybuilding the best way to gain massive size is through volume... Imagine if this were your day:

Eat....
Work-out
Eat
Work-out
Eat
Take a Nap
Eat
Work-out
Eat
Eat
Work-out
Eat
Eat
Sleep....
Repeat.

Although each work-out session may not be the highest intensity, the sheer volume in addition to the food intake and sleep will make you grow. Unfortunately we all live in reality and this is an impossibility for those in the real world.

I understand (from his mouth maybe) he was working out about 6 hours a day, often to failure, and he spoke of working to not just failure but to fainting.

I have never fainted, just thrown up, so he must have some pretty intense drive.

I have one of his books, and he said he only waited 30 seconds between sets. If you're only getting 30 seconds of rest and you fail, you are not truly "training to failure".

bump mike..

i have also heard that Arnold lied about how much training he did in order to encourage his competitors to overtrain and see him as a 'superhuman'.

and i dont agree that even if any of us had NOTHING to do with our lives (no bills or kids) we could train like arnold. Massive 50-60 set workouts..double split on 3 days of the week for 6 straight days..yikes.

I heard a few years back from guys in Steve Michalik's Mr. America's Gym (1985) that Arnold went from:

Off-Season: 4x/wk, Bodyparts 1x/wk
Mid : 5x/wk, Bodybarts 2x/wk,except Arms & Legs 1x/wk
Pre-Contest: 6x/wk, All Bodyparts 2x/wk

Supposedly, 10-12 sets for Large Bodyparts and 6-9 sets for Bis & Tris.
Can anybody possibly verify this and provide his EXACT training routine????
Thanx in advance!
