There's a lot of talk as to wheater the old timers were more dedicated and more into health and I believe the answer is "yes" on both counts. Naturally, people are people and had they been given the choices available today, a lot of old timers would have taken advantage of them.
But in general, the magazines promoted health and that was adopted by the populace. Bodybuilders were known as "health nuts." It wasn't until Arnold came along and irreverantly (conciously? calculatingly?) broke the rules.
He used more drugs than was considered acceptable. He was willing to push the limits. He was also very vocal about forgetting to take his vitamins and liking beer. He wasn't discreet in the way he went through women. (Believe it ot not, Weider felt this contradicted the "clean cut" image he was trying to give bodybuilding.) And to top it off, he was shown smoking a joint at the end of Pumping Iron. Arnold singlehandly reinvented the bodybuilder from being a "square" into a hip, rebulous fun seeker.
Arnold has always had an uncanny talent for picking the right time to go against the grain. He got into acting when they said muscles were "out" but by chance, "Stay Hungry" and The Jayne Mansfield " story were being cast.
And of course, what better role for a bad actor with a heavy accent than to play a cyborg with 2 lines of dialouge?
And what better time for him to get into politics than when people are so disgusted with the residing govenor of California that there was a recall?
Timing is everything.
Don't be surprised if in 2008 he timing is right for the law to be changed about having a foreign born President.
And I believe he'll win -- for no other reason other than one undeniable fact. He's a winner.
