now i pretty much got the bug outta me
but this one career field caught my attention, combat engineer
i like the mix of engineering/construction along with infantry duty
what more can you tell me about this job?
do combat engineers work side by side with infantry or do they follow?
k to all who help
chef-bone/cob i could use your input

Great MOS! You get to do some of your "engineering" with C-4 and plastiques! Plus learn to operate heavy equipement, etc. Be advised you have the possibility of going in places very early in the game with little support....maybe just an A-Team. Then again you could be running a frontloader at a sanitation site in Iraq.

SF engineers are a part of a team (there are two in a team) but you need to go through Q course / SF Selection for that. Going straight in you can go for 18X but the majority of the team members I know complain about the new guys coming straight into SF.

I assume you mean a normal engineer which is a 21B. I was infantry for the majority of my military career and the engineers would dig holes and stick up constantine wire for us and operate heavy equipment. It is not like you will be working side by side with infantry per se. Typically our fighting positions or the wire would be set up before we got there so we never saw the engineers all that much.

Your ASVAB score will determine your "job" under the specific MOS. Assuming that you are wanting to be with the Infantry and your score is where it needs to be, your unit can be attached to Infantry units and could be doing everything from building temp. bridges and roads for additional troops and/or supplies to move through and over, to demolition of buildings and obstructions (This can also mean creating obstacles, trenches and such to slow opposing forces down or guide them in specific directions.), to laying and/or clearing mines, etc...
Combat engineers help ground troops to advance, which means you will be somewhere before anyone else with little to moderate support and will be expected to clear an area by fire, right next to the Infantry to complete your job as some missions can be to negotiate occupied structures and/or areas. Combat Engineers are trained as Infantry a bit moreso than other MOS's that just get a taste in basic.

Or you could choke on the test and drive a tractor.

Agreed, there are diff levels to each MOS, and again, how smart Uncle Sam thinks you are via the ASVAB, will determine where you are placed.

I was SF for my duration and we rarely saw the "engineers" outside of our own squads. But in that case we are all crosstrained with each having a "specialized" job. However, dependent upon the circumstances, we had to act as escorts into specific areas that needed small arms support on many occasions. And the engineers were part of the gameplan should we take fire/encounter resistance.

the Wehrmacht "Pioniere" battallions inspiredother armies to develop their own combat engineers battallions
