Are you better than your father?

in what way?

I do not measure myself with my fellow family members. I think the goal of everyone in life is to achieve a little more than the other generation. I have most assuredly done that but I am humble and am thankful for everything I have. I cannot compare myself with my father and refuse to do so. In some ways that would be disrespectful and I refuse to dishonor my family.

I know my brother has issues with me. I am not sure why. I think it is because of my success. He is still living at home (he is in his late 20's) and he drives a cab for a living. He dropped out of college twice and between the both of us was definitely the most gifted. I have never bragged about my accomplishments. In fact, whenever I won awards or whatever I never told my parents. It is against my character.

i give my father all the respect in the world. he did an outstanding job raising me to be better than him. he told me that the day i left for the navy. i strive ot do things a little different than he did only because he has a lot of pride and is a union worker to the bone as a truck driver but i saw him go on strike too many times and us go on food stamps for me to even think about following his footsteps. but i respect my father more than anything in this world.

I'm better than my biological father but will never measure up to my mother, nor her mother, nor her mother before her.

If I ever come close, I'll be very happy with myself.

influenced but no competition, impossible to answer really, separate beings with different strengths and weaknesses

I hope so. It would be a reflection on his parenting skills.

And for my kids, I hope the same thing.

And one day in 2038, a RazorGunsJR will be owning stupid little kids on EFExtreme.com, and stealing all their bitches.

Hell ya!! My old man is a prick with no backbone or soul. I would never treat my kids like my father treated me and my sisters.

my parents are like the perfect people. they dont even drink! my father not only takes care of his family - but contributes to mine, and several other families.

and my mother is the manager of him!

and they raised two twin blonde women.

and you know how every generation outdoes the other? not me. i married a blue collar worker and plan on the medium sized house, a boat , 2 kids dog and maybe a lakehouse when i retire. i will be happy with that. Dad was always trying to make millions all the while wishing he was a pastor.

they dont drink, smoke, speed, cuss, i cant think of one thing wrong my parents do. lol!

different times, with different values..

His values are not mine, so in many ways i cannot measure myself to his standards, nor do i seek his approval or anyone else..

I am much more critical of myself than anyone else however, so am always in a state of improvement..

its funny, my grandfather (my dads dad) told me some stories about my dad and all these years i thought my dad never did anything wrong. he made me look like a saint. he rolled with bad bros which explains why my entire life he rejected some friends i had and tried to not let me hang with them.....

LOL that's funny. that might be so with my dad, but my mom wouldnt even drink champagne on her wedding night!

I think they did a good job. im the perfect balance of good and evil.

I strive everyday to be half the man as my father. I know that sounds corny as hell, but it is the truth. He grew up under bridges and now he is a self made millionaire. He taught me that nothing in life comes easy and that you have to work hard for everything.

I would hate to say I'm better than my mom. I guess it depends on what traits you value more. I am more successful, take better care of myself, am more conservative with my son. She was more of a free spirit, teller of tall tales, creative type.

Very ambigious question. Better in what way? Since most Americans think a person's worth is associated with how much money they make, then no. My dad treats people well, he is respected by many.... He was a philanderer I found out which surprised me, but I believe most men are that have the means and opportunities to be so. Am I better than him? I don't think so and really don't care.

i have vision, my dad does not. ive been in charge many times even in my first day in the navy in bootcamp at 17. i was a section leader and chosen at that. since then i have gained a lot of experience as a leader and im looked at as such in any job i do. my dad on the other hand has no ambition of being in charge. i asked my mom why he wont be a manager at the trucking company and she said if he does he cant be in the union and he does not want that. pride will kill you and hold you back. i see myself owning my own business in the future when im done with school. i know, its not as easy as i make it sound as everyone going to school for business says this. well im 33 years old, ive owned my own business but i knew it was a short term gig, just to make some money on the side, when it got too big and i was still in the navy i had to stop and move on. but i know i can do it, i have loads of experience i just need the know how to ask other business's for funding for my next venture. thats where i fall short. i have no clue what to say.

basically my dad held himself back, i strive to make myself and my family better each and every day.

i'll never surpass my dad profesionally because he LOVES his work; he is at the top of his field and works longer hours than anybody i have ever heard of. I like to think I will lead a balanced life that is more fulfilling though...i think i have done a lot more socially, athletically, and romantically. But my dad and i never have real conversations so maybe there is a lot more to him that i am missing

Maybe your dad preferred it that way. Not everyone wants to be the leader of the pack. Hell, I don't even want to be in the pack... Neither a leader or follower, I prefer to work alone. I would be more suited for research work I think if I wanted to make the sacrifices to have more money and possessions.

am I a better parent than my mother? yes.

a better person? i don't think so. my mother is hella smart, organized, and altruistic.

in perhaps the last conversation we ever had, my Father said "be a man, my son, do what has to be done".

yeh Dad, i'm trying.

But u fooled me. you made it all look so easy.

somehow i am not surprised...

here's a stark reality.

MOST of the kids today will NOT be better than their parents. Standard of living, income, happiness.

First time in generations. And your kids will be even worse.

God bless USA.

The race isn't over yet but so far I am running in the lead. Other than my father is one of the nices guys you will meet, I am more on the dickish side at times.

My father had 13 kids, stayed away from the home most of the time (was an alcoholic most of those years), got sober, got rich, had an affair, divorced my mother.

I have not caused any of that damage to my wife so I would hope the answer is yes.

Yet - there are a lot of things about my Father I admire.

Now am I better than my Mother - no way. See above.

You know what?!?!
I know I am a good mom, I know that I am better than my parents. I would die before I see my kids go through some of the shit that I went through.... I am not the best mom as I also know that we all can stand for some improvements. Some times I get a bit carried away and forget that my words,my actions, and my emotions bounce off of my kids. Sure they are young and what not. But do I really want them to grow up and be like me??? NO, we all want better for our kids than what we are and who we are...Some times I feel like a failure as to who I want to be and what I want to represent and I fear that my daughter will be like me in some aspects, and I fear that my boys will choose a woman like me...Call me fucky silly, or even emo...I don't care

Yes!!! but that doesn't say much.... I havn't heard from him in years... but if hes anything like he was when he left... I would say YES!!

tks for your comment and the karma messages i have received from my reply!

the longer he is gone the harder it becomes for me to "measure up" to the standards he set in his own quiet, unassuming, "lead by example and not by shouting" non-macho way. his gentle but firm "velvet fist" glue kept our family together thru some turbulent emotional times.

one of his favorite sayings was "never complain, never explain. just do what has to be done." :artist:

i wish i could tell him how much i admired him, the way he lived his life and the huge influence he has on me.

Compared to my mom, I'm just as awesome but in a different way. She's a highly educated career driven PhD. She mothered me as best she could and loves me to pieces. Great lady who I have a lot of respect for.

Compared to my daddy, NO. Never, will I be "better" than him. He always does the right thing when nobody's looking (character). Never has a bad word to say about anyone. I really ADORE him and am totally crying right now just thinking about him and the man he is (was).
