Are you a bodybuilder?

Bobber

Well-known member
I have been asked that twice this week so far and don't know how to reply. I am not big enough to be able to call myself that and at the same time I have been lifting for almost 5 years now so it's not like I don't lift. What do yall say when asked this question?

I dont think size really matters. If you work hard to continuously improve your physique then, by definition, you are a bodybuilder.

r u a body builder

dude you obviously have too much time on your hands. this is the kind of shit your debating in your head. tell them yes . a dip shit body builder

Hillariouse.....thanks for that

I would throw in a helpful adjective like 'retarded' before bodybuilder. That way when people ask you can say, "Yes, I'm a retarded bodybuilder." I'm not calling you retarded, I'm just sayin' is all. :)

Nope...not even close. Have no desire to be.

I also feel that you are not a bodybuilder unless you compete...or have competed before. You are not a basketball player till you actually play...

n : someone who does special exercises to develop the musculature

If this is the definition, anyone who lifts weights is a bodybuilder. In that since of the word, yes, I am a bodybuilder.

However, if you mean bodybuilder as in one who competes in BB competitions, or one of those mass monsters who strives to be as big as possible, then no, I am not and do not want to be.

My goals are mainly for athletic, health, appearance, and strength. I lift to improve my skills, improve my health, look better, and do some powerlifting to break personal records.

I'm not a bodybuilder in the purest sense of the word. I care a lot about strength also, and I don't plan on entering a contest.

Well I found two version:

1- The process of developing the musculature of the body through specific types of diet and physical exercise, such as weightlifting, especially for competitive exhibition. (The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition)

2- someone who does special exercises to develop the musculature (Princeton University)

Now we could debate on this forever. Personally I dont think you need to be into some kind of competition. When I go hunting or fishing, I do that for fun. But for some people it's a sport. But I still consider myself a hunter.

Go back to StarDestroy.com bitch!

Oh wait... never mind. ;)

I was just kidding bro. I wasn't calling you a retard it's just when something pops in my head I tend to write it down without thinking. I apologize.

I'm no bodybuilder. I'd be a disgrace to their race.

I lift hard twice a week and supplement diet with protein. Thats about it. If I had different genetics then I would be more interested. I have to work hard just to keep from being too small. :(

I'm pretty strong though. I could tear someone in half if I weighed 300. Have no desire to weigh more than 10 pounds more and lose a little bodyfat. Hard to do without pharmaceuticals and worrying about it.

Then I take my comment back.

It depends in who's eyes. If someone comes to me and they say 'shit, you look really jacked, are you a bodybuilder'? i say yes.

On the other hand, if someone says, 'you should be alot bigger than you are' I say 'i'm not a bodybuilder, i just enjoy working out':D

I still feel that till you have bulked, dieted (hard), went through ALL of the stress...and actually got up on stage...you AREN'T a bodybuilder...

You lift weights...but aren't a bodybuilder.

Then if I play golf, go at the practice range and play some amateur tournaments ? Should I be considered a golfer ?

I guess it depend on how you look at it. To me bodybuilder is basically building the body. When people ask if I am a bodybuilder I usually say I don't compete but I'm into the bodybuilding lifestyle because I think they are asking if I compete which I don't and don't really have a desire to do so. Every now and then I do. But then again maybe they are just asking if I work out. Who knows what people are thinking?

That is poor logic, a COMPETITIVE BODYBUILDER is someone who, obviously, competes...a bodybuilder is what the word says, someone who focuses on building their body....a weightlifter isnt even the same thing, a weightlifter is someone who durrr lifts weights, and doesnt necessarily care to build their bodies.

Nope. Just a strongwoman. I never get asked if I work out.....I don't know if that could be a good thing or a bad thing....lol.

This may be questionable logic. :)
Bodybuilders build their bodies almost entirely from weightlifting. It would be a challenge to be a competent weightlifter without building the body as a byproduct.

I don't believe many people would lift weights if it didn't make them look better. So, loosely speaking, most weightlifters are bodybuilders by a stricy definition I suppose.

Depends of if we are looking at the connotative or denotative meaning of the word bodybuilder. Big difference. :)

So in other words you are gay???

Well...when I show my friends in class a few pics of you...they can ALL tell that you workout. Or...it might be that you are stronger than most of them (yes, the men).

Did you forget that you have calves, quads, hams, glutes, erectors, lats, pecs, and arms??? What about those traps???

I CAN TELL!!!

Agree, if you compete you're a bb'er.

I have to more or less agree with B-fold on this point, mainly because I think that that is how most people define a bodybuilder. If you tell someone you're a bodybuilder, they're going to have the impression that you compete or are training for competition. If you tell someone that you are a bodybuilder but you don't compete, I think you should at least state that (unless you just don't give a shit and want to give them a quick answer. I do that a lot :D )
