Are squats really that neccessary??

Well I used to be able to fit in to a size 32 waist or even 30 and now im wearing a size 34. I dont think my bf levels have gotten too high I think its my ass getting bigger from all the deep squats im doing. My ass is pointing out more and im not too impressed with this look. I mean arnie had skinny legs and he looked aewsome!! My legs at the moment are 25 1/2 inches and I dont want them to be any bigger.

Do u think if I stop doing squats and perform leg presses instead that my ass will shrink down??

thanks

It will...walking/running will help to lean down instead of bulk also.

I don't know what your routine looks like, but I would suggest more reps per set instead of doing like crazy heavy weight for singles or triples. I've always squatted like this and my legs are big, but not out of proportion.....they look athletic.

Ex. of my normal squat routine:

135x10
225x10
315x8x3

Some days I'll go heavy but still do reps......like:

135x10
225x8
315x5
365x5
405x3
455x1

I'll occassionally throw in a set of 20 at 225 at the end too. My point is that my legs could be a lot bigger, and I could probably squat a lot more, but I like the way my legs look from this semi-high rep routine. Aside from mixing it up occassionally with other exercises, its usually the same.

you can still squat, just dont go down as deep if you are worried about your ass getting too big.Do more sissy squats. The same goes with leg presses, the deeper you go,the more you are hitting your glutes.

I did squats for many years. I don't do them anymore - I do leg press. Less aches.

In my opinion - you need a big movement on the legs or you can hardly consider yourself a bodybuilder. Legs are the most important bit to train. And girls actually like a round butt.

Why not just train less frequently, more sets, and using less weight? Build more endurance? Do some bicycling to build greater leg shape...

thanks guys,

I think ill stop going so deep, but this may sound weird but I love squatting.. Even though it kicks your ass, your weekly workout is never complete without a set of grueling squats!!

Amen, brother, I couldn't agree more.

I had a similar problem to this a few years back, I did too much heavy leg work and I was beginning to grow out of my pants.

I eased up on the leg work and decided to go to lighter weights/higher reps to keep the tone, but to stop building the muscle.

Worked just fine.

Who cares what the damn waist size of your pants are??? I sure as hell dont and I have to buy pants one to two sizes larger in the waiste to accomidate my ass and legs. My waist always has plenty of room. So what, are people looking at your pants to see what waist size they are? For me, belts are to pull in the extra waistline, not to hold my pants up, my ass hold em up just fine :)

So you are saying you WANT "white man's ass"? Why? Girls like a well defined and muscular ass.

Just do like 99% of the population who even bothers to squat--go down half way. You'll get some good muscularity, but you won't have to wear pants four sizes too big.

BTW, you think Arnold had skinny legs????

never heard it called that before :). And actually I get complimented on my ass a lot, its in proportion with my 28" legs so I could care less what waist size my pants are.

New To Squats

I just started doing squats.

Issue: After I perform squats (even after my last workout where I lowered the weight), I get a serious dull ache in my knee joints (only my knees) the next day or two after I do them. I never have pain while I'm doing them, and the aches go away in time for me to hit squats again (I do them two times a week).

Question: From what I've said would you see this as technique problem (I've read up and everything seems fine), the joints (hips and knees) getting accustomed to a new exercise, or is this just a normal part of using squats? I have pretty poor flexibilty in my legs, could this be the reason?

I do a basic 4x12, but I was hoping that this would pass so I could start going heavier.

Any suggestions?

Spank, I have a bum kneee myself, arthritis to be exact, told I would never walk. Not only does that kneee ache on occasion, but so does my good knee. I dont think aching knee's is uncommon and as long as its not a sharp pain and it goes away you should be fine. Perhaps you want to try some joint products and see if it helps. I think as lifters we all suffer from aches and pains that the average joe would never knew they had, but then again the pain is part of the pleasure :)

Strong man i ahve the exact same problem as you. My arse is big but majority is muscle and the girls like it :D
But i don't want it to get any bigger however i don't feel sore the next day without squats and their benefits are numerous including raising you nat test!
I am a ''31'' waist but have ''25''legs so i allways have to buy 34 waist and use a belt and i want bigger legs but without having to buy clown trousres.
How the hell do the pro's wear trousers at contest time paul dillet is ''29'' w and ''33'' hmmm. taylor made?

I rememeber a dude i knew a while back who complained of having a big ass so he purposely overtrained it to get it smaller.

I can't remember exactly but i think it worked.
