"They said it was for the black man, they said it was for the Mexican, and not for the white man. But if you look in the streets, it wasn't about Rodney King. Its this fucked up situation and these fucked up police. Its about comin up and stayin on top and screamin 1-8-7 on a motherfuckin cop"....

Bradlee Nowell

One of the few non-hip hop groups I love. I miss Sublime's shit

Can you explain "1-8-7 on a motherfuckin cop".... ?
I'm sure it an expression of love and respect, but I wanted to be sure...

hell yeah machine..sublime....i remember I use to listen to What I got so much my senior year in high school..i thought that was one of the greatest songs of all time to party to

darktooth

thats a stone temple pilots's song

i think its called "trippin on a hole and a paper heart" or something like that

That riot was nothing more than reverse racism,a bunch
of animals acting like animals..You would think differently if you would have been one of those white people attacked just cause you were white.

umm...are you retarded or something? Brad Nowell lead singer of sublime was white...and who are you talking to??

Um, wrong date. The riots were on 4/29 and 30th, 1992. (I was in Hollywood, I remember.) And the ignition for the riots was the Rodney king verdict, but the fuel was anger by the black community towards Koreans. (Most of the businesses burned down were korean-owned businesses. There was a murder case in '91, I think, involving a korean store owner who was acquitted for shooting a young black girl in the back who was leaving the store with an orange juice.)

I remember a rap show on the local NPR station, the first tune they played on the first night was "The Revolution will not be televised". Cool theme for the riots, although they were televised quite thoroughly.

And the other thing I remember most about the riots was George Bush Sr.'s response. He made a statement blaming the riots on Lyndon Johnson (1963 to 68, as you may recall) and the welfare state. Clueless fucking twit.

If you listened to the words of the song, you would find that it's not in support of what happened; in fact, it's a refutation that the riots actually stood for anything noble -- rather, that they were a reversion to baser instincts based on societal and economic factors with a slight bit of window dressing in the way of justification.

rmurf
I think you're right. But it's still what the song says. He was from CA too. Maybe the heroin clouded his memory.

yeah i dont remember exactly what the date was for the riots..i was only 13 years old at the time.

liek machine said, Brad Nowell, Sublime's lead singer/writer used that date as teh title of the song...

he's no historical wiz, but he was a pretty damn good song writer.

I remember the riots too well. I was in college and my dad was in LA on business. I was scared to death that he had been caught in that mess. It started over the Rodney King verdict but I think most of the home boys were simply using that as an excuse to steal a new TV.

I have to admit that opportunists were running rampant in the streets of LA that day. I'd have brought the national guard in for that one and REALLY shot things up. (note that I am not very quick to wish to direct the Federal Gov't to solve many probelms, but this was one that intervention should have been a part of)

The national guard did come in, on Thursday night. And yes, they did wind up shooting a few people. I NEVER, EVER thought I'd be so relieved to see the National Guard patrolling street corners where I lived. The whole thing ground to a screeching halt the moment they were in place.

sublime is my all time favorite band.
