Why Consumer Reports can't recommend iPhone 4 - Yahoo! Shopping

fucking retarded apple shit.

Why Consumer Reports can't recommend the iPhone 4.

It's official. Consumer Reports' engineers have just completed testing the iPhone 4, and have confirmed that there is a problem with its reception. When your finger or hand touches a spot on the phone's lower left side—an easy thing, especially for lefties—the signal can significantly degrade enough to cause you to lose your connection altogether if you're in an area with a weak signal. Due to this problem, we can't recommend the iPhone 4.

We reached this conclusion after testing all three of our iPhone 4s (purchased at three separate retailers in the New York area) in the controlled environment of CU's radio frequency (RF) isolation chamber. In this room, which is impervious to outside radio signals, our test engineers connected the phones to our base-station emulator, a device that simulates carrier cell towers (see video: IPhone 4 Design Defect Confirmed). We also tested several other AT&T phones the same way, including the iPhone 3G S and the Palm Pre. None of those phones had the signal-loss problems of the iPhone 4.

Our findings call into question the recent claim by Apple that the iPhone 4's signal-strength issues were largely an optical illusion caused by faulty software that "mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength."

The tests also indicate that AT&T's network might not be the primary suspect in the iPhone 4's much-reported signal woes..

We did, however, find an affordable solution for suffering iPhone 4 users: Cover the antenna gap with a piece of duct tape or another thick, non-conductive material youve got to be shitting me lol. It may not be pretty, but it works. We also expect that using a case would remedy the problem. We'll test a few cases this week and report back.

The signal problem is the reason that we did not cite the iPhone 4 as a "recommended" model, even though its score in our other tests placed it atop the latest Ratings of smart phones that were released today.

The iPhone scored high, in part because it sports the sharpest display and best video camera we've seen on any phone, and even outshines its high-scoring predecessors with improved battery life and such new features as a front-facing camera for video chats and a built-in gyroscope that turns the phone into a super-responsive game controller. But Apple needs to come up with a permanent—and free—fix for the antenna problem before we can recommend the iPhone 4.

If you want an iPhone that works well without a masking-tape fix, we continue to recommend an older model, the 3G S.

I'm considering Verizon. AT&T is god-aweful and it looks like the iPhone4 just isn't that killer relative to other options now.

ATT is godaweful, ive had teh iphone over a year and the phone really wouldnt be as bad if it werent weighed down by the network. Verizon is tops though. What phones you looking at for verizon rob?

i love verizon.
I've had both the blackberry and the droid... I recommend the blackberry (I had the storm. large screen and slightly awkward touch screen that took some getting used to)

Yeah I just read this. Terrible. People are complaining about the proximity sensor, too.

I think I might offer a free service where I use special high quality electrical tape (3M 88+) to cover that gap for people. It will get people coming in the store.

I find it most ironic that a product most associated with unsophisticated rednecks (duct tape) is the solution for a product most associated with high brow educated obama voters (iphone)

As a current iPhone user, I am highly offended that you would imply I'm sophisticated.

Knoxville coverage is a disaster. Five bars in many places, but there are high traffic routes that drop 100% of the time.

i have tmobile. never had any problems. customer service is great. as for phones, if your not satisfied with their selection you can always look into some unlocked phones.:)

Thanks! It entertains me too but I'm working toward a kinder, gentler plunkster.

No MO tho.

Kindler gentler is no fun. Unleash the full power of your armed and fully operational GOP battle station!!!!!!11111

belonging will always trump function for most of americans.

couldn't have said it better KB
It's really sad, especially the preys that fall for their computers and Itampons

my buddy was bitching how his 3g is non upgradeable and thinks apple is a bunch of money squeezing peckah heads.

When they first came-out, iPhones were a game changer.

Since then AT&T service has gotten worse, other phone companies have gotten better and other hand held units (i.e. Droid) have gained a lot of ground.

My GF (virtually wife) got a droid and it's pretty impressive. Now it still wasn't as ready to go out of the box as an iPhone was, but it's list of apps and features were impressive. I'm gonna switch to a Droid X after they've been out a few days.

They may very well be going into a down cycle, but I'd never count Apple out. They could innovate again and be right back on top.

This iphone antenna problem isn't going to do much if any damage to apple at all. It's not like they're the only people ever to make a cell phone that's had a glitch.

Apple makes awesome and very innovative stuff. I still use a PC for my daily work and a mac for my personal use. The mac is far superior in ever aspect except one. The only downfall is I can't use my mac for some of my DMS based software for work.

Ortiz...I know you don't like macs but how about before you chime in on another thread about apple products you come in with some first hand knowledge and not something you read about online.

And no, going to best buy and playing with one for 5 min doesn't count.

Kthxbye
