I'm planning my annual trip to Killington, VT for December and was working on getting ready.....bought a new pair of ski pants today & will prob. pick up a new jacket tomorrow....

Any training suggestions??

i snowboard. i ordered a whole new burton set up (top of line shit too). picking it up this weekend.

keep that ass loose (not that way pervert, unless you want to).
knees are real important too. maybe even taking some gloucosamine might be a good idea, for the joints.

don't forget to hit the hottub at the end of each skiing day. helps the muscles relax, plus it's fun.

Well the place we stay doesn't have a hot tub....wish we could take the one from home!! I've been taking gluc/chon for a few months now....

I saw a Spyder Jacket I like -- green, cream, black & silver for $179....I think I'm gonna get it.... pants I got are basic black....Need new goggles too...

ive done both,(xc and downhill) boarding totally rules though.

I haven't tried that yet.....maybe someday I'll take a lesson...

skiing is probably my favorite passtime

recently took up freeskiing a couple years ago... honestly riding rails and busting tricks looks 100000000x better when you're on skis

Work on high rep deeo squats and lot's of lunges. Strict leg extensions with a light weight and a pause on the top. I also do lot's a elliptical work to get my legs in shape before the season. You want to be able to carve for a few minutes, and each carve is a half squat at speed, so make sure your legs don't burn too quick. Also in VT the air is going to be thinner, so get some extra conditioning.

As far as clothing. Don't be fooled by brand names like spider. Look at what the garment is made of as opposed who made it. I would highly recommend Gore tex or double gore tex attire, pants and jacket. Make those your priority. Then compose your entire undergament from 2 layers of thermal fleece with one of them being a turtle neck. For the lower body go with a thicker fleece thermal sweat pants style pants. Throw your gore tex over that and you'll be able to move freely and ski for hours without getting cold. If you get hot, open one of the vent zippers on the ski jacket, it will cool you right off. Top the outfit with a wind proof hat and you're all set.

Hey thanks for the suggestions!!

For base layers I have: Underarmour Cold Gear Leggings, UA CG shirt, Silk Shirt, Silk Pants, Silk Gloves & Socks, Ski Socks, Long Underwear type pants & shirt (thick) & I top it all off with a pair of winter running tights & a turtleneck shirt + neck gaitor & hat......Don't wear all that stuff at once but I've got options....

Well, the Spyder jacket I saw was thicker, says it's waterproof, has a fleece liner built in, etc -- so it seemed the best choice as the jacket I have now is way too big and I don't want to get stuck buying a jacket on the slopes -- $$$$

I am excited the season is almost here. I usually head up to the Pocono's a couple times a month during the winter. Killington is so much fun, enjoy your trip!

I would just keep it simple. Two layers of fleece for the upper body and One thick layer for the lower body. Cover those with a gore tex ski jacket and ski pants and you're all set. Don't get fancy with silk wear. Nothing outperforms Gore tex, (it really traps heat but vents moisture) combined with fleece. Fleece will keeo your body temperature almost identicaly when wet or dry so it's a shoe in with gore tex. Whool is the only alternative i would consider.

Also make sure you don't wear fleece socks, go with whool on those. Fleece compresses to much in a foot wear application. So again

1. Gore tex
2. fleece

Do it once and do it right, i can't say enough about gore tex, you won't be sorry. It's the getup i've been using and will never go back to anything else. I see people bundled up on the sloped all the time and it maked me laugh because they look like michelin men, and i stand there looking very normal and mobile and warm.

looking forward to break my neck this season. Can't wait to test my custom made board i bought last spring. My advise - keep those legs in shape and have tons of fun.

side to side bunny hops over a bar, do four sets, use ankle weights
side to side pony hops over a bar, do four sets, use ankle weights, heavy ones

all your regular leg work done for stamina. the few days before you go dont hit the gym, allow for a full and complete recovery.

When you are out there: STAY HYDRATED. Seen many a fellow skier bonk due to lack of liquids and food.

I was amazed when I wore the UA last ski season.....I was very warm! And I already own the silk stuff, so it's not an extra expense...

I think the ski socks I have are made with wool...... and I have TONS of fleece jackets.....and the jacket I like has a fleece liner -- so if I get it I won't need a separate fleece....

Know what you mean about the Michelan Man!! LOL Since my ski stuff is so big on me, that what I look like, which is why I want new stuff....

I'll keep the Gore Tex in mind --although aren't most jackets made with it nowadays....

I had all that stuff too, but after wiping out I found myself practically undressed by the time I stopped at the bottom of the slope. Funny now....
I was sitting there with no hat, goggles, gloves, poles, or skis thinking WTF just happened? LOL

Well so was I.... ;) Yeah, yeah.....

Actually I have a large breakfast (protein/carbs/fats) in the am & always take some trail mix & protein bars on the slopes with me.....

Then it's FREE chicken wings at Casey's at 4 pm!!!!!!!!!!

that sounds great! I haven't been to killington since the '80s... almost killed myself there, tossed right over a cliff and was guided by an angel onto a drift on the backside of a boulder, a meter one way or the other, and I would have been slope pizza.

Training?

how can you train to ski?
The only thing I can think of would be to focus on leg work, that is if you want to do high speed slaloms or such

Really skiing doesnt take much physical shape, as long as you have the right technique. There are fat men who take long ass ski trips, with the right skills its pretty smooth.

Well here's a site I found for some ideas: http://www.bodyresults.com/E2SkiCircuit.asp

But, yes I'm going to focus more on leg & back work. I've noticed since I've started lifting heavier that with added muscle, I have more stamina on the long trails & it's easier to pole on flat areas....

I think I'm set. Got a new pair of socks, glove liners & a new jacket. I may also want to get a new hat & goggles -- my goggles are pretty beat.

i would say i am a better at wakeboarding becuase i can do inverts where as i cant do any snowboarding. i can still hold my own though. i hit a 25ft kicker my second boarding trip and now i can hit 50ft'ers. i can go through a terrain park and hit about anything they can throw at me. except S rails. bastards are hard. straight rails i can hit.

You're kidding me right? Down hill skiing is one of the most physically demanding sports out there. I'm not talking about a leisure stroll down the slopes but some balls out carving going 90mph.. Watch your HR go to 180, lol!
