New member
That didn't get their degree related in that field?

I have my B.S. in engineering and was always interested getting into some type of law enforcement....any tips on how to crossover?

You'll be "crossing over" alright. Why would anyone want to work for the devil?

Law Enforcement = Owned by Government

Be a fireman or something!

You would make a fantastic Bar Tender in a gay bar.

PK is on the money.

I can never have a serious thread. Can I?

Bastards.

First of all, what kind of law enforcement do you want to do? Officer type stuff with the patrol car and night stick?

Or state/fed stuff?

Answer those for yourself, and then look into which one you want to do. I have known people with English degrees get into LE.

I'd like to get into the state/fed level. I was going to take the FBI test, but there is no way I could leave my family for 16 weeks of training.

Then it sounds like a state position is best for you. Again, I think it doesn't really matter what kind of degree you have, as long as you have one.

Of course, a criminal justice degree would be a leg up, but an underwater basketweaving degree won't hurt either.

doesn't relaly matter, as long as your not specializing, field agenst benefit from language degrees adn tehy usualyl look for psych backgrounds

If you can't leave your family for the training for Fed level law enforcement, then do at least State....Think being a State Trooper is better than being a county/city/local sheriff/cop.... At least you can move all around the state without any hassle at all..

I'm planning on getting lasik next year and start filling out the paperwork for Secret Service, Customs.... Would never do DEA, ATF, and as for FBI, don't trust them completely.

I know in PA to become a trooper you either need 60 college credits or 30 credits and 2 years active military service. My brother is thinking about becoming a trooper. Thats the best I can do for you on a serious note.

Comical side: Rent Super Troopers. Funny frigging movie.

Just a heads up. The Secret Services has been losing agents right and left. It's a good organization, but resources have been stretched beyond thin.

If you do accept a slot with them, just be prepared to go anywhere at anytime. I hope you are not married, or in a serious relationship.

the jobs aren't nearly as cool as you think, i know one secret service agent really well, well he is retired now, he said it blew ass sounded cool though, if you have a docotorate the cia will pay you 65-71k wow what a sweet deal, border patrol, cops are jobs that sound cool, but the pay is not worth it, comraderie is there but you can find that in several professions, btw,FBI agents are recruited from those with business degrees atleast in part,

Criminal Justice degree is somewhat helpful but not necessary since most jurisdictions only require the equivalent of an AA. LE is very competitive right now. With budget cuts galore you have alot of former cops looking for jobs right now. You also have ex-military looking for cop jobs. Those people get priority. Then you have to deal with the politics (i.e. affirmative action). Add to that the plethora of white males with bachelor's degrees looking to become cops and you have a cluster fuck. My advice is to go for huge cities like LA or NY. You can forget about Federal stuff unless you are proficient in one of the Arabic languages or Chinese. The Feds also require an accounting degree, law degree, or MD.
