Anyone in here had sinus surgery?

split endz

My freakin sinuses kill me every year at this time. If I get any kind of cold, it develops into a month-long thing & sinus infection. Doc says that from a deviated septum (bout 10 yrs ago), there are cavaties in my sinuses & I could have surgery, or just keep dealing with it. Anyone here had the surgery? Some say it is not worth it & that they still have complications after surgery. Advice ??

Same situation.

Which surgery the sinus or the septum?

I have a deviated septum as well which from what I have been told the symptoms will become worse with age - I'm going for the surgery (septum) it may also lessen my headaches (God willing).

I know a girl that has really bad sinus infections several times a year and she has some sort of procedure done in the docs office to clear her out and I believe she has surgery on her sinuses.

I just realized that's not really helpful is it. :(

Somewhat helpful: 2 ways>

1. Misery loves company :wavey:

2. I was not aware there was a procedure that could be done in the docs office, I will check on that.

ps. From what I understand, if an injury causes a deviated septum, that often results in forthcoming sinus problems. I think a plastic surgeon has to address the septum correction, but sinus correction is more common & done by ear/nose/throat (naso-pharengyl) specialist.

Appreciate your response

1 - true true :)

2 - I'll try and find out what it's called.

Hmm I was born with mine, I remember going on a consult as a teen to have it fixed but for some reason it wasn't. Interestingly enough I spent most of my life in the city and within 6 months of moving to the country I had severe allergies/asthma (I suspect I've always had it but my prior surroundings were good for it). Anyway, my ENT said he could fix it or I could go to a Plastic surgeon but he stressed to me after seeing my sinus scan that I really need to have it fixed.

Have you had a scan done?
Do you get sinus headaches?

It's cake - 20 minutes tops.

I have not had the scan yet, only diagnosis by description. Doc knows as soon as I walk in the office why I am there, as it has been going on for several years now. I get the headaches sometimes & hate it worse than anything... nothing cures that headache. You would be surprised how many times I have been told, " don't get the surgery" (once even today). They then proceed to tell me how painful it is & not worth the trouble. Others (but fewer) say get it done. Still trying to figure this out. Keep me updated on your progress please.

Wow, that's both frustrating and distressing.
:worried:

For what it is worth I tried for years to convince doctors that I had a sinus infection but they kept telling me if it's not yellow or green it's just allergies. Years later and a few weeks ago I went to the doc thinking I had the start of strep throat, he confirmed and gave me a z-pak. A few days in the congested block in my forehead started to break and I had my yellow and green. (EUW - sorry)

Go figure, it took antibiotics that I could not get in the first place to show that I wasn't crazy after all.

UGH

It sucks.

Anything I can find out - I'll drop you a line.

Hope you feel better.

Same thing here. Sometimes I go to this walk-in clinic (my doc is so hard to get appt with) & I could get 1 of several docs there. They say same thing,' if it's not green or yellow blah blah blah' I say look, I've been going thru this long enough to know what is going on. Docs are really getting protective of those antibiotics aren't they ? Anyhoo, a couple of times I have gone in the clinic, only to walk out 5 min later with...nothing (except a $40 co-pay ) totally pisses me off. T Y

I live in canada, and the surgery was covered bu government insurnce. It took 1.5 hrs. I had a septorhynoplasty(internal) for deviated septum, and also scraped polypes(growths) out, which caused my allergies. The surgery ws great, I had straw sized tubes about 2 inches long up my nose for 3 weeks after, but no one can see them I am noe PERFECTLY free of sinus trouble. I would do it again in a minute. Yhink long term relief, rather than short term inconvenience. Hope this helps.

I had a deviated septum, born with it. I have always had many sinus infections every year and nasal congestion. Had a septoplasty and rhinoplasty(had a bump on the bridge) done a few years back. It helped tremendously in terms of breathing, sinus problems, vanity. And the anesthesia was AWESOME. Insurance covered the septoplasty so the rhinoplasy was free. I would do it again and recommend it.

There is some kind of a flush they do to clear out sinus passages. But the idea of pressured water being sprayed in my nose is very uncomfortable. Like ^^Phil^^ said much more convenient to have surgery once than short term fixes for a long time.
