I bought a book last week and have been reading it. A lot of the ideals and principals go great with my constitution, but there's a lot of crap in there (mainly the spirituality) that I just don't care for. I wan to use it to help clear/quiet/ slow down my mind, get focused and train my mind to obey.

One of the problems I'm having right now is with the prayer/chant/mantra or watever it's called. The book tells you to start out with St. Francis prayer because of the positive and unselfish message in it. I thought I would just make up my own, but then the book warned against making your own (atleast at first) because you could re-enforce negative traits that you are trying to take away.

What kind of prayers, chants do you guys use? Has nayone made their own? What guidelines should I use to make my own?

when i first started my teacher told me to pick "peace " or "love " (or a few others i forget now)....whichever was my favorite. i picked peace....sitting in a comfortable position ....focusing on letting the chair COMPLETELY support my body...relaxing my feet than my legs then my stomach arms hands..ect ect ..focusing on not focuing...letting what ever happen in my mind happen ...good or bad....breathing Naturally....repeating "peace" to myself only saying it when i Start to inhale and when i exhale ...(not during the breath)
letting my mind go. ...after a while meditating you begin to see colors...(i could go on but thats the jist of it)...its very personal...dont let a book tell you whats right or wrong...there is a ton a different types...you sound like your more into yoga...i like that alot too. anyway :)

I meditate on a regular basis. Helps to keep me grounded. The only advise I can give is not to take books to literally. I mean, they are o.k. to get ideas from, but you must find the right meditation that works for your life and your life only. And that only comes from looking inside yourself and finding what your inner soul needs.

Just call me SA.. Ill smooth you over with and comfort you with my hypnotic voice :chomp:

how's the rest of your lifestyle, br0?

are you still drinking up a storm when you can, and running yourself down in general?

you've got to cut out the noise as much as you can. it will make your efforts to meditate that much more meaningful.

my lifestyle isn't healthy either, so don't consider this preaching.

My lifestyle is still running a little fast. One of the reasons why I want to teach my mind to obey and focus, but I'm not looking to turn into a monk or a peace loving beatnick. I like my life with a little bit of a wild pace, but I'd like to be able to focus on real things when real things need to be done. I also stress out a lot so I'd like to learn to clear and slow down the mind at those times instead of freaking out and/or going on a bender.

I'd like to condition my mind for focus and power of the self as well as clear out insecurities of the ego. What I'm seeking is almost Hitler like except I'm not gonna kill any jews, just lazyness and procrastination.

Yes, I have learned how to meditate and zone out when I get too stressed. Just turn everything off and think of nothing but relaxing your body.

I did do a type of meditation before our sparring matches. It wasn't considered deep meditation though. We would lie in silence and in a sense plan our attack on our opponent, see ourselves go through the motions exactly as we wanted them to take place.

I must say, it worked great. I always sparred better when I meditated before ;)

this is amazing you actually think you are a ninja

I used to.

It got old really quick. Neither side ever really got anywhere... in over 80% of cases - they ended up going to court anyway. Not all situations are like that it depends on what type of cases you take on.

WTF!

I'm talking about meditation you fucking laundry stainer

SA- I wouldn't worry about the chanting thing especially if you disagree with what they are telling you to chant. I find focusing on something like a burning candle or an object that reflects light in different ways to be helpful. Also if you need some background noise to help drown out the world find something like the Japanese drums that has changing beat patterns woven together. The key is to clear you mind and then let it focus on only one thing at a time a good exercise is this.

Imagine you are made of sand and lying on the beach. As the tide slowly comes in it startes to erode you away bit by bit. First the toes, then feet, slowly up the legs, until finally all of you is gone. Control your breathing and focus on the calming waves coming over you. Imagine that each grain of sand is one of your thoughts/worries and are being carried away into emptiness. Your body/mind should be totally at ease at this point.

Cheers,
Scotsman

I love sitting down on the beach to meditate. Watching the waves roll in and the and sound of them crashing puts you in a trance. Blocks out all the people/things who try and bring NEGATIVE energy into your life. :dolphin:

I used to meditate quite a bit, but then I got married and pretty much stopped it completely. I honestly think the reason I stopped is sex. When I was single I used to meditate at night to calm my mind down, I have a habit of just thinking too much. Sex before bed put me right to sleep, so I didn't really need to do it anymore. Ironic, now that I've been single for a few months I've started it up again, though not like I used to.

I like to relax my entire body and then focus on the sounds all around me. It's amazing what you can hear when you are truly paying attention to the world around you. I have to lock the cats out of the room though or they crawl all over me.
