anyone here live in/familiar with Sarasota FL?

My parents live in Sarasota and I lived there for over ten years.
Its a cool little artsy city with way too many old farts! Siesta Key Beach is the best beach on the Gulfcoast of Florida. The whitest and softest sand you will find. There is a lot of growth and development happening in Sarasota. It was voted one of the top cities to relocate to no too long ago.
There are a lot of little pubs downtown if you're into that. For better entertainment most Sarasotans go to Tampa which is about an hour away. Jerry Springer, Brian Johnson (lead singer AC/DC), and some others live in Sarasota and can often be seen around town.
Sales tax is 7%. Property taxes are high in Sarasota (the city). However other parts of Sarasota County property taxes aren't as high. The newer areas such as North Port have relatively low property taxes and house prices are very cheap. The bad thing, North Port REALLY sucks. There is absolutely nothing to do there. Stores close at 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays. It's pretty much out in the sticks. There is no nightlife. Police suck there. They have nothing better to do so they pull you over for everything! The hottest and newest area of Sarasota is an area called Lakewood Ranch. It's a more upscale area that is fairly brand new. Housing cost is higher there than most other parts of Sarasota except Siesta Key Beach.
Sarasota's neighboring city Bradenton is cheaper to live in but a lot of areas are sort of ghetto.

I went to school there for three years (New College).
I don't remember getting too bored there. Hungry Howie's Pizza. The museums at the old Ringling estates (of Ringling Bros. circus fame). There's a very nice performing arts center called the Asolo (pronounce "Oslo"). If you do go there go to New College for a PCP.
