Anyone here had whiplash?

How long should you wait before you can resume training?

I'm feeling less sore than I was, but it's only been 4 days... think I can go ahead, or am I risking hurting something even more?

I would definitely wait. You tense your neck without realizing it in pretty much any exercise I can think of. At the very least you're going to delay complete recovery and quite possibly aggravate the injury. I've learned that much with my shoulder problems.

Thanks anya... I don't know a lot about exactly what happens when you get whiplash, so I'm not sure if it's just the muscles that are sore from the sudden jerking motion, cause in that case I could still workout probably right? But how to know if something was out of alignment?

I'm going to the chiro tomorrow, but I wondered if today I could do a workout. I feel like such a lazy slug, it's driving me crazy, I've sat on my butt since it happened on Thursday. I feel like I'm going to wake up 30 pounds fatter, so I'm anxious to get back to the gym...at the same time, don't want to be an idiot and make it worse..

You're totally right, your back & neck is somehow involved in almost every exercise... grrr...

No, but there's a few people here I'd like to inflict with a case of whiplash now and then. lol

If you MUST, you could just take it easy...do some mellow stuff (only) if you feel really good. Go for a walk or something.

Otherwise, it's best to wait and see what your chiro says. I've been rear-ended twice...it wrecked havok on my neck for weeks but mostly the week after the accident(s). My chiro explained to me that it DOES throw your spine out of alignment. In my case, I was hit from the right rear side, which complicated the matter. He did periodic adjustments combined with "shock" therapy and hot pads...nice.

Yikes Nonerz! Shock therapy = scary.

How long was it before you were up to your "regular" workout intensity? Also, is your neck back to 100% now, or do you still sometimes feel the effects of the previous injuries?

Thanks!! :)

The "shock" therapy was electro-stim-something-or-other. Not bad actually...I really liked it! Then again I'm a freak when it comes to a little pain! I wasn't working out at the time, so I can't really answer your first question.

As for my neck now...I have lots of problems with it but I think it is attributed to my constant sitting at a computer with my head in the improper position...bad habit. This problem is compounded with TMJ clicking...so I've had to cut out the gum chewing (I was almost as bad as Veruca Salt--you know, the girl from Charlie & the Chocolate Factory who turned into a blueberry).

Please make sure you have no injuries to discs, muscles or ligaments. I was involved in an auto accident in Jan. '03 and just found out I have ligament injuries. I knew about a herniated disc around May but the ligament injury has just been diagnosed. So even if you are feeling better, please get back into your strength training slowly. If you have other soft tissue injuries, some types of strength training will exacerbate those injuries. This is exactly what happened to me. Had I known about the ligament sprains, I would have not tried to return to training when I did.

And please dont worry about resting and not working out. YOur body has undergone a trauma and rest will help you heal more quickly. If inactivity really bothers you (as it did me) try to continue with moderate cardio, i.e. fast pace walking, elliptical trainer w/o using arms or bicycle.

Hope you get to feeling better soon.

:)

Nonerz,

Was the shock-therapy via acupuncture? I'm having acupuncture on Friday, kinda nervous, never done it before.

Thanks for the advice! Exactly what my chiro said.

No problem. I sincerely hope you only have muscle strains (as this is the most common injury) and not something like what I have. I would not wish this pain on my worst enemy. As for the e-stim procedure, the doc or PT does not use needles; they use small pads with electodes inside. They will usually adhere the pads on the area where the spasms are and then turn up the juice until just before it is uncomfortable for you. So you get zapped for anywhere from 5-15 minutes. Supposedly the zapping will cause the muscles to contract and then relax. I am still not sure how this helps with spasms and helping your body to heal but it does feel good and it does help with muscle spasms.

Please post an update on your acupuncture. I would be most interested in your results and your opinion as to whether it was beneficial to you.

I'm curious about the acupuncture too... let us know. Hope you're feeling better!

Okay I'll let you both know about the acupuncture. I've never done it before, but I figure it's worth a try, who knows, it might help.

I think we're only doing it on my right shoulder... and that will be done tomorrow afternoon. I don't really know what it's expected to do, I can see how it would increase blood flow to the area, but I'll just wait and see.

I had acupuncture done yesterday for the first time. I went into it with an open mind and no expectations and I'm VERY impressed with the results.

It's been 2 weeks since the accident, and my shoulder movement had been really restricted. For example, when standing with my arms straight out to the sides, I try to raise them up and touch my hands over my head. My left arm can go all the way up (90 degrees), the right side, only about 20 degrees. After daily stretching and every other day working with a chiro, I'd regained a tiny amount of range, and could get to about 30 degrees.

After the acupuncture, I'm can go the full 90 with my right arm. The last 10 degrees is a little stiff, but at least I can do it. Woo hoo!

Anyway, I'm very happy with the results, and would recommend it to anyone with a similar type of injury.

Whiplash is a rather strange occurence. I picked a little up about two years ago when a guy in a dodge ram truck rear-ended my little Beemer at a stoplight. The sun was low on the horizon and he didn't see the light, or apparently my car. Fortunately those cars have really good countermeasures to prevent injuries, but it still jolted my body pretty good. Anyways, I didn't really have any pain at first, but a few weeks later, my neck would hurt while doing certain types of lifting. So, I go to my quack, and he told me that whiplash can stay with you for quite a while. So, after a nice bear hug and a neck-snap movement that resembles that of a silent assassin kill move, I felt better. It took about 6 months, though before I quit getting the occassional neck twinge.

It is good to hear that the accupuncture is working. I have never tried it. And hopefully you are getting some funds from the pud who ran into you.

Paulo

p.s. aren't you the lass that was getting cat-calls while your were on the side of the road after the accident?

LOLOL.. silent assassin killer move.. :lmao: That's so funny!

I'm so happy with the results of the acupuncture, and yes, the putz that hit me is paying for it. :) I haven't been able to lift since the accident (just light cardio) so I'm a little nervous to see what other aches and pains I'm going to discover when I next work out. Hopefully tomorrow...

PS. Yes, I am that lass. And I thought getting hit on in the gym was bad...

Well, it sucked because the neck is involved in a lot of lifts, and started hurting especially when I was struggling for that last rep.

You must of gotten hit pretty bad for those results. A lot of people get excess amounts of whiplash because their seat is not adjusted properly. I got hit so hard that the rear of my car lifted off the ground, but my seat and headrest limited my neck strain to a minimum. At least that is my analysis.

And yes, I also might reccommend you lay off the 600 lb deadlifts and the 400lb benches for a little while. If you do exercises, you might try more isolation stuff. Just a thought.

And furthermore, if you weren't so damn hot, maybe men might be able to maintain their self control and hit on you when it is more appropriate. Like, say, on a fitness training forum. Maybe you could go in looking like Tammy Faye Baker or something.

ciao,

Paulo

Paulo: I just came from the chiro, he said I could lift tomorrow :D Fingers crossed nothing painful happens. (Well other than the ordinary) :)

I wasn't hit really hard, but I was in an awkward position at the time, leaning forward, twisted to the right and reaching under my seat to get the CD case. Hence the messed up right shoulder. So I didn't even get anywhere near the headrest when I flung backwards.

It's a good thing your chair was adjusted right, by the sounds of how hard you got hit, youch. Which exercises did you find were the most affected by your injury?

Thanks qt... :bigkiss: You make me smile.

lol @ tammy faye baker.

Lat pull downs, shrugs, mostly upper body stuff, but really anytime that I strained my body, my neck would hurt. So, my quack told me not to lift much for a while. He said that the force of the impact would have done me serious damage if my seat was incorrectly adjusted. Which is why I asked about that. Anyways, then I got out of the rhythm of working out and I only recently started up again.

I see what you mean about your situation. Because of your awkward position you ended up with more problems than what may have normally transpired. Hopefully a quick recovery will ensue.

I have to go weld up some stuff right now, but you go have a good workout, k.
