I'm on the east coast & want to plant shrubs, greenery & plants in my backyard which gets full sun during the day and is a concrete patio. Thus these plants will be in planters/hanging pots & possibly a small retaining wall will be built to contain said plants....

Any suggestions for plants that will hold up well to heat & full sun??

you looking for a variety of colors? Annuals or year round. Easy maintanence? Low or high growth?

A variety of colors would be nice if possible, mini evergreen would be nice too, small growth, no giant trees, plants that would do well in a container, easy maintenance.......

The flower containers would be sitting in full sun on a concrete pad.....

The flower bed would be built with retaining blocks on a concrete pad.....

Jen, you have an awesome "landscape". I think you should plant twolips.

They are already planted and since spring is coming ready to bloom, however I always keep them neatly trimmed...... :supercool

Not to sure of the specs of the location ( bed size, time and amount of sun, irrigation, etc..) Here is something simple.
1. various colors of crotons
2. evergreens
3. junipers and hollies
4. impatiens, koleus..these are annuals and will give good color but need TLC and frequent replacing.
5. Viburnum (either suspensum or odaratisserum) The first is small growth, nut much maintanence, the later is quick growth and size but can be controlled with frequent trimmings.

Those were the top few I would suggest without having a visual of your place. I mean on a pool deck use potted small hibiscus trees and azalea topiaries, use hanging baskets around the hous and porch, plant varieties in alternating orders for a colorful viewing perspective. Use the vuburnums for a hedge atmosphere. Many plants to choose from, but this is a good start for a do it yourself homeowner.
