anyone familiar with Bioinformatics

my dad keeps telling me this is "where it's at." he is insisting i go to some seminar my school is having about it. anyone here familiar with it, and more importantly, how much it pays?

Get a CS MIS degree.
Minor in biology.

On a higher plane of bioinformatics is where someone would put genetic computing theory. But you'd need lots of math to get to this plane.

Basically the low end is a guy(girl) who manages biological information. At the high end is someone who designs genetic computing algorithms to reflect the biological functions of the human body.

people do it at home now too.
yay!
beowolf clusters.

I don't have the link on this computer, but there is a web page that is devoted to learning all that shit. I think they have a forum like this for it as well.
sounds pretty cool to me, but I only have enough time to learn so many things. that is on my list of things to learn more of, but I'm not even close now.

Does your dad sound like the lady from Fast Times at Ridgemont High saying, "Plastics is where it's at?"

As an editorial note: I doubt that bioinformatics (on the low to medium ranges) will ever be anymore coveted than MIS in general.

Now the high end of it is a whole different ball game. But early predictions are the genetic computing isn't usefull unless you like massive vats of genetic soup.

is it really as 'hot' as my dad claims? and what's the pay like? i'm not familiar with this field at all.

Here's a blurb from a website:

Bioinformatics: The science of developing computer databases and algorithms for the purpose of speeding up and enhancing biological research. Bioinformatics is being used most noticeably in the Human Genome Project, the effort to identify the 80,000 genes in human DNA . New academic programs are training students in Bioinformatics by providing them with backgrounds in molecular biology and in computer science, including database design and analytical approaches. (Definition from Whatis.com)

Bioinformatics: a combination of Computer Science, Information Technology and Genetics to determine and analyze genetic information. (Definition from BitsJournal.com)

Bioinformatics: is the science and technology about learning, managing and processing biological information. (Definition from Missouri University lecture)

hahaha, nah. i think im gonna check out this seminar on sunday though. cant hurt.

it is huge here in Cambridge, but coming straight out of school wouldn't put you at the high end pay range (which here would be over $100K a year). probably more like $50K I'd guess.

the problem with looking at industries as being "hot" and using that to deciding on what to study on - by the time you are out of school, there are going to be others that have done the same, flooded the market, and lowered the salaries.
not to mention there will be something else that is "hot"

so for the most part - do what you love

LOL - hmm, I was an art major.

I had to decide between comp sci and art. either one would require all of my time spent in either the labs or the studios in order to get A's - I wanted to go into special effects, so I did art.

but now pretty much all I do is comp sci.

HS is dead-on.
When I was in college, Business Communications was where it was at.

Had I studied that, I'd be some MBA toting propagandist who nets less than the total interest on his credit cards. And working in a dead field.

Now I'm in a dead field anyway, so it's kinda moot.

Bioinformatics = complex mathematical biology. It's basically putting the pieces of THE PUZZLE OF LIFE together. My brain hurts.

My first major was graphic arts. But I switched majors and schools entirely because everyone at risd was an angsty goth.

I majored in computer science and mathematics.

I have nothing enlightening to this conversation, just wanted to say what the fuck is up!

I majored in Anatomy and Physiology, and have a minor in Philosophy.

No no.
Be like me. Ride around on your Ducati and brag about your Mac!!!

oh shit - with my avatars off I didn't even notice - my bad!

how are you doing? you don't come here much anymore right?
