Anyone ever get shoulder pain from close grip bench?

I've been getting extreme shoulder pain in my right front shoulder from doing close grip bench presses. It started about two weeks ago. Yesterday I couldn't even do a full set. It's the only exercise that hurts. Am I doing something wrong? Has anyone else ever had this problem?

Also, is there another good compound tricep exercise that I can do instead? I already also do dips but any other suggestions would be great.

Thanks.

I get it too if I don't do a lot of warm up sets first. Also try and keep your elbows tucked in, takes some strain on the ant. head of the shoulder.

Front of the shoulder? Have a massotherapist (or similar) check it out.

I had similar problems - more on regular, wide grip bench - that turned out to be an inflamed bicep tendon. The tendon (from what was explained to me) extends out the top of the bicep, UNDER the pec major, and ties into the shoulder. So the pain appeared in my shoulder/pec tie-in area, but was really something else altogether.

Typically the widest I go now is shoulder width (~20"-24" space between thumbs) with close grip (~15"-18") being the norm. And after a year or so I am at my wide grip bench max with no pain and bigger triceps.

For right now, Rest-Ice and Ibuprofen. Then check your form (and lower the weight) per cubuff27.

yes, close grip benching with the elbows in will irritate an AC injury.. do you feel like you have a 'knot' where the clavicle meets the delt?

I have a pretty bad one right now.. last time I had the problem I could dip with a fair bit of weight but couldnt close grip much more than a plate without pain.

Actually yes it feels like a small "knot". I can do dips fine without pain with good weight attached, but that close grip is killing me.

From what I've read/seen my form seems fine. I'm not doing heavy weight, I use good form on everything I do to prevent injury and because I don't use a spotter.
