Anyone else feel the same way?

I do not understand why some people have to try to find new ways to workout, new programs with cool names etc.

Why do you think that what worked for tens of thousands of people in the past 50 years or so wont work for you?

This is the answer why so many people workout yet few make progress because everyone is trying to do something other then the basics, women in gyms go to fancy classes taebo and kickboxing and spinning yet few ever make any progress, those who train with plain old weights and cardio over time see a difference, they don’t just get thinned out but have a shape to them.

Same goes with guys everyone is trying to find that secret program that secret machine and the secret number of reps and sets that needed, it’s a big sad joke whats going on and if you are serious about making progress drop those programs and stick to what works for everyone on planet earth, you are no different.

If all those fancy machines they sell on TV to millions of people and all those books talking about different ways then the basics to workout would work the streets would be filled with people that are in shape.

Yeah those programs are good to get people in the gym but without progress they wont be going for long.

There are some serious ethical issues in the health and leisure industry that have to be addressed. Preying on people's insecurity about their bodies and image by having an attractive looking guy or chick with a physique that took years to perfect "getting great results thanks to this new work-out regime developed by us at ????????" You are right - the old exercises are still the best and the rules of diet will never change (whether you want to bulk or cut) no matter what Dick brings out a new book.

That is one of the reasons that magazines like Flex and Muscle & Fitness have seen a sharp drop in sales. Its not thanks to the internet as they would like us to believe, but thanks to Dudes like me and you seeing through their Bullshit. Ronnie uses new and improved Cell-tech for maximum results My Ass. Ronnie drinks Winnie by the pint glass more like!

It is the responsibility of gyms, experienced Weight-lifters, and ethical athletes to lift the lid on these Bullshit Artists and tell people that results come from hard work and patience.

There have been some movements forward in the ways of hypertrophic research, since there was very little in the past. However, basic physiological principles will always remain the same. The first and foremost rule of diet is:

Weight Gain = Calories In > Calories Out
Weight Loss = Calories Out < Calories In

In terms of training, people do need to realize that steady progress over time will give them results, when combined with proper eating habits. No isolation exercises are needed. Heavy, multi-jointed movements will build the physiques most people are looking for, with some touch-up work thrown in to a cycle or two near the end.

Tom, you are THE MAN around here! I've spent years talking about exercises that hit multiple muscles like deadlifting, squatting, benching, dumb-bell combination exercises etc. Glad to know theres at least a few of us left!!!

What I think is the most amazing is when new lifters, or some experienced ones for that matter, ask you what you do. I tell them"keep it simple" ie. compound movements, food, rest. As I am explaining this I can see they are not getting the "secret" they wanted. Their eyes glaze over or get distracted. Then later I see them doing too many sets/reps/exercises to get their biceps to grow. A neverending cycle, (for most).

KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid

Eat a reasonable diet that is in line with your goals (weight gain/loss)

Increase your capacity in the core lifts that actually matter. Squat, dead, bench, chin, overhead, row. Choose a basic rep and volume range and use the weight on the bar to quantify progress (rocket science, I know).

So many programs have been written on this and are time tested and proven. Very little is new in the training field although the material frequently purchased by the lay public and used in the gyms is unfit for toilet paper and yeah, it's to the point where you really have to question the ethics of this promotion machine that people are still buying into.

People are always in search of some magic rep scheme, program, supplement, or something to throw money at. Too many people are busting their ass and have no clue what they are doing or how organize an effective program that allows a non-novice to progress consistently in the lifts over time.

That statement shocked me so much I dropped my Thigh-Master and had to stop reading 'Add Mass: Just by Thinking' by I.M. Rich. :D

I blame all those night-school Personal Trainers with their elastic tubing and their exercise balls.

As Mad said, 'Keep it simple'.
Too bad so many people have become 'simple'.

Yep, you see it every day in gym. The same people looking the same for years. I've had several people here at work ask what I did to change how I look so much. Most want to know my bicep/tricep routine. When I tell them that most of it is diet and hard working out, they don't understand........or want to.

There are even people who train descently, but don't know to eat enough food, so they turn to drugs too quickly. It's sad, but hey, if you wanna look at it in a positive light - less competition. ;)

As P.T. Barnum once said "theres a sucker born every minute".. as long as there are minutes in the day there is money to be made and suckers around to buy fancy gimmicks, books, thighmasters, etc...

I quoted all of this because it has to be said again. Excellent post, riverrock.

red, what the FUCK is in your avatar? I'm going to have nightmares. I hope my daughter doesn't come out to look like that...

Its a surreal photoshop of a kid eating a sundae, freaky looking.

established wisdom is anything but in this industry... but fuck em, people are dumb. I'll never bother explaining to some skinny guy that what he's doing isnt going to do shit for him, or helping someone learn how to squat bench or deadlift unless they ask me.. and even then you know you'll come back the next time and see them doing the same lame shit they've been brainwashed into doing.

i get annoyed at that too. plus people that start a routine and 3 weeks later want to switch because they haven't seen results.

I agree. From now on im just gonna tell people to do alot of isolation curls and tricept kickbacks to put on some serious mass. If there looking for strength ill tell them to use the nautilus machines so they can stay the fuck outta my squat rack.

I work at night so I catch all the good infomericals about the ab extractor/splitter or whatever and it amazes me the amount of crap being sold. What pisses me off is how misleading they are because all of the people using them on the commerical didn't get in the shape they are in by using that junk. I made the mistake of buying a subscription to Muscle and Fitness and am very dissappointed. Most of the mag is ads for some BS stuff I could care less about and not much good info on bodybuilding. Men's Health is a better mag I think.

this shit makes me sick to no end. so that guy on the bowflex commercial uses bowflex huh? fuck no!! he has been doing basic compound movements with freeweights and cutting up just for this commercial! seems like false ads to me.

Well most of these "modern" ways to get in shape, loose weight, diet, etc are not really marketed towards experienced athletes/BB'ers that know what it take to get the body they want. It takes hard work and dedication - and it certainly is not easy (well fudamentally easy but having the drive isn't easy for most). That's not what people want to hear. They want to hear about how they can use this new machine for 6 minutes a day and they will look more like the fitness model advertising the product.

Like my mom. I love her so but sometimes she can really disappoint me. She knows I work out everyday and have for years. She could always come to me for any diet and exercise advice. But she knows what I'm going to say. Drop the cheese cake and work out, lol. But NO she goes off and tells me she bought one of those new ab machines "I just want to tighten up". She and her friends that helped talk her into it don't want to hear that regular diet and basic ab exercises with out machines can do wonders. They want "easier" way. Luckily she's not really over weight and was graced with my grandmother's metabolism and stays @ 110 WITH the cheese cake lol.
