Anyone else afraid???

Anyone else afraid of doctors??? Talked to mine today...and I have been really scared ever since. Very scared. Not sure what to do or who to really talk to...or you feel like there is no one to talk to...or no one to trust. No one that will accept you if you do...

doctors are hit and miss. generally you will encounter the run of the mill doctor who frowns upon anything outside of basic living. be the average: bodyfat, composition, diet, exercise, lifestyle. moderation basically. moderation didnt get them through med school thats for sure. for athletes, its tough because a general practitioner usually wont understand peak performance and the price one has to pay to get it. so they shift back to moderation mode. if they start to lecture though.....im thinking "look elsewhere".

docs give me the creeps either way. you never know if they will say this or that for your best interest or whether they want another visit. i trust them to a point but im wary as well.

I'm working on getting accepted to med school right now and I work in a hospital as well. you should be afraid!!! I mean these guys really don't pay attention, all they want is to make money and the HMO's don't like extensive care..... Most of them know nothing of an athlete's life and how to approach it.... I would rather talk to a chiro and a physical therapist than a doctor.... BTW B what you doc say??? if you don't mind.... A guy I work with told me that I couldn't keep lifting and training at this rate or I would get really messed up:rolleyes:

Not really something that I am really ready to think about at the moment... It may be very hard for me to accept.

I am thinking that I need a 2nd opinion...but this one was fairly cheap at the free clinic.

Just sounds like they wanna make some money off you man. If it's about your back, didn't you say recently you had a friend who was a chiropractor?

ask him to refer u to a clinician who is better qualified to understand the needs of a sportsman

if it is bad news you do need to speak to people about it, to fully explore any options open to you....it will help them plan, and it will make things clearer to you as well

B, I've never been afraid of doctors, but finding a good one is very hard. I just recently changed doctors because the one I had been going to was overweight and older, and couldn't understand why I was working out, trying to gain weight, etc. Found a younger doctor who is more understanding.

If you've been told something serious...there's nothing wrong with getting a 2nd opinion, IMO.

Doctors ARE hit or miss. My dermatologist is awesome. He's a young guy, into working out, a great resource. We talk about my cycles (PH) and what not. I don't feel the need to keep things from him or anything. And he is into my behavior, doesn't condemn it or anything.

I have been to 2 Internists in the past 2 months and they both SUCKED! One sucked bad enough that I am complaining to my insurance company as well as the local medical society and health board. I just wish my dermo was an Internist.

Anyways they are obligated to treat you fairly and everything. None of them are out to hurt you. Just find one whose personality fits yours.

Lord Suston is right on. I'd say 80% of doctors really don't know crap, and if they do, they don't know how to apply it, or they don't care about appying it. The percentage of docs that are actually competent with athletic concerns is so low its silly.

Anyway b, personally, my answer is yes. Aside from physical(mechanical) problems I'm dealing with, I have a heart condition that I don't want to pursue just because I don't want to hear what it will mean. I refuse to listen to anyone telling me I have to stop doing something I love. I'll take the heart attack under the squat rack anyday over sitting on my ass watching TV(as long as I get the rep up first:) ).

b fold,

ya im afraid of doctors...i really dont think to highly of em

orthopedic doctors are particularly bad, ive had numerous acute injuries during my days playing basketball and I can honestly say none of them ever helped me get better. On the other hand, i recently got some ART done by a chiro and feel a lot better...

my last two experiences were shoulder and a foot injury:

shoulder he couldnt do anything cuz i went in too late after initial injury and gave me anti-inflammatories...its a legit reason on the docs part but i was like wtf he could told me some things to work on (ie rotators cuff)...it was a total waste of time and money

for my foot those bastards wanted to fuse my 1 metatarsal together with a fucking rod...i told him id give up bball if i had to do that shit to get back on the court. luckily my foot healed and hasnt been a problem since. NOTE: wear proper shoes at all times, trust me

anyway, keep this in mind next time the doc gives you a diagnosis...

butchers know how to cut meat.
ortho's know how to perform surgery...

its why they are there...to cut ya

B, This is about your lifestyle bro, don't mess around, seek out a real sports doc. Go so far as to call the buisness line of a local pro sports team (maybe college) and see who they rec. Anything outside the norm most doctors just turn into parrots and repeat the same crap. Don't let this guy get you mental.

I think that their diagnosis is pretty cut and dry...some sports related...some not. It just really gets me down and I do not know who to trust to really talk to...or who to ask for help from.

I feel the same way about Dr's as I do about dentists, you never go there to hear good news.....

Is it a bad thing when the doctor calls you at home after hours to tell you that he MUST see you as soon as he gets back in town on Monday? What about when he refuses to discuss the conditions of your results over the phone?

B True

did u take some xrays or anything like that. perhaps he wants to show you and explain to you all at once. if over phone he cant show you the xrays or whatever. plus he is on a little vacation probably, trying to get you into the office next monday means money. In the end I think doctors are legit, is insurance covering any of these visits B?

It is the free clinic at the college...I don't have insurance. I went to the ER for some tests a few weeks ago and they had me fill out some forms for $$ assistance on my medical bills.

The clinic doctor is ONLY in the office on Thursday and Monday.

B fold.......I can't lie. Yes. Doctors do not try to track people down at home after hours to let them know their test results came back normal. I know this from experience and a conversation I had about this with my cousin the doctor last night. He says while doctors prefer to give bad news in person once the condition he found was so serious he had to tell a patient over the phone because it was so imperative that she seek immediate care. He also said they are much more diligent with bad news than good news. It's often "if you don't hear back from me the news was not bad."

Not tryin' to scare ya bro, but be ready for some serious news.

And to Thai and B, don't ignore your illnesses. It is better to know everything you can and make your decisions accordingly. I know I have a pretty serious heart condition that I know the risks of and still train; that doesn't mean I don't want to hear about it; I know a lot about my particular heart condition.

Not trying to preach, just remember that doctors are usually good people, they may be busy, harried, or not specialists in our lifestyle but they work by a pretty serious code of ethics and never intentionally try to harm a patient.

Man...that hurts to hear. I have some pretty good ideas too. If it all comes to be truthful...what I think...my career may be shortened...by A LOT.

Against Dr. Reccomendations...I am going to take it day by day in the gym...day by day and light.

I don't mean to pry into your personal stuff, but I try to keep up with your strongman goals. Is this an injury that you could recover 100% from with time off or is the damage already done?

I will. I am trying to lift right now as well as work around all of this. My heart is not wanting to let me lift much at all yet I want to...badly.

Good Luck man, i know you have a lot more guts than a lot of people, or at least me, for keeping on training.

Those closest to me call it something differently...STUPIDITY!!!

B True

there's definately sacrifices made when one wants to be the best. but when you cross over that line, it IS stupidity. you dont want to cause any permanent damage over something that may be correctable. it's hard saying anything because i have no idea what the extent of your injuries are.

you have tons of time man, you dont wanna risk aggravating anything that may have happened already.

take 'er easy

There is a difference between balls and brains. If he's going to do something that will cause permanent back damage, it makes no sense to risk it.

You have to think about his future. If he has a bad back will he be able to pick up and play with his kids? Will he be able to play football and baseball with them? Will he be able to get out of bed when he's 50?

There is more to life then picking up heavy weights. Sometimes some of us (including me) forget about that fact.

I just pray that Clint will be ok and he'll be able to continue towards his goal.

My back is fine...it is my heart that I am worried about.
