It must actually be quite uncomfortable to bench any weight with the straps between your hands and the bar. Its not like a soft even cushion like a glove, its going to be uneven where the strap wraps around and must dig in to your palm

Hey Frost! Everyones different. Strength levels differ greatly fom person to person.Tons of factors involved. Even untrained individuals. I suggest to start with the empty bar and work your way up. Thats what I did. Shoot for a weight you can get about 12 reps with. Lower reps are good for strength and higher reps are good for size. Higher then 12 for bench I wouldnt recommend. Hope that helps
Maybe he was trying to keep up with the ever changing fashion trends? I hear the colorful baggy pants with the string tank top, clown shoes and a clown nose is the "IN" style these days.

Sounds like a good exercise for forearms. You may want to try some reverse barbell curls (done with an overhand placement, rather then underhand.) and hammer curls as well. However forearms should develop with everything else. You shouldnt have to devote too much time to them. JMO haha My forearms are small by the way
