Western is the only way to ride when you chase cows. :) He's not a professional cow chaser, but we do it for fun once in a while. I'm hoping to be able to move him to Colorado with me, eventually. I hate the idea of leaving him behind. :(

Ok how do I post pictures for non plats again?

Mach and me

This is my kid... I say that because I've had him since the second he was born and he will only listen to me. He's a little out of shape in this picture, but this was from a good three years ago. He's in much better shape now. I'd like to get him to some team penning competitions this summer. He has the potential to be a great roper as well because he's fast and loves chasing cows, but I wouldn't be able to compete (being a woman and all). Reining is another thing he shows a lot of potential with. We'll see how much time I have for what this summer. :)

how many hands is he? looks like a decent sized horse thats for sure.

good luck this summer if ya get the time, working with horses is so rewarding, imo anyway :)

He's 15.2. Not very big, but he's a good size for a cow horse.

nice,he is a very handsome boy

Yeah and he knows it too. When he's in trouble he busts out the 'puppy dog look'... pathetic part of that is it works. :worried:

I love riding horses, but I haven't done it since college. I had two semesters of horseback riding for gym class in college. I only took it to meet girls (and it payed off :D) but I really really enjoyed it.

I've often thought about doing it again, I probably will now that I'm single.

They offer horseback riding for gym class? WTF? I went to school in the wrong state. Wait, I grew up in the wrong state. :(

I love it and go out as often as possible, usually 3-4 times a month

here is a picture from last summer on merlin

I love horses since my childhood.
They are beautiful beasts.
But that looks more like a mule dude.

Awww....I've only been real horseback riding once, in Lanai (Hawaii). We went horseback riding on the mountain. It was a lot of fun but I forgot to take allergy meds before hand so I was sneezing the entire time.

My neighbour at home owns a horse and horse back rides quite often.

Yeah, western

When I finish building, I'm going to finally buy my own. Just dont feel right about owning a horse I can only see a few times a week. Cruel to the animal

I used to have 2 horses yrs ago before this town grew Sold 12 acres of my property to a convenience store that was a truck stop.
I loved riding along the railroad tracks.

Does that mean you are builiding a place to stable them?

My house actually has a small horse barn on the property that's big enough for two horses, I'm using it for storage right now. I'm not sure I could take care of a horse on my own, it seems a little intimidating. Maybe I'll meet a nice woman who owns horses and we can keep them here at the house, I wouldn't mind that at all. :D

Smart man. :) Before my parents bought their current place we had to board our horses at various stables. Moving them around is not fair, imo.

It sucks, more so when you're bigger. The quality of rental horses isn't great to begin with, and it gets worse when you need one lareg enough to carry a 230lb + guy.

Then over here its all english equestrian which I dont much care for myself. Reins are for braking only;) Start screwing around and it just messes up the horse ;)

LOL! I couldn't agree more in regards to the reins. :)

I took a friend of mine trail riding one weekend. She's a hunter/jumper and has never ridden outside an arena (and I do mean never). She flipped out when we had to walk the horses along the road to get to the trail head. Her exact words were "You're going to ride them on the road?!!" I swear she went ghost white when she realized I was serious.

:lmao:

I think its all about the cute outfits for them. I dated a girl who was hunter/jumper. She was actually a pretty good rider though. But they are all a lil snooby, and dont think western is real riding;)

The land I bought backs into a pretty large reservation, lots of trails, so it should be a lot of fun to ride in eventually. Just have to find someone I can trust to help me buy a sound horse.

Where do you live? I know of a few good quarter horse ranches up in Montana that produce outstanding cow horses.

NJ :worried:

If you do though Id appreciate any good leads.

Im not knowledgable or proficient enough to judge myself. I'd do the vet exam, but always better to deal with someone reputable, and maybe there is someone out there who I can hire to help make a decision.

OK, it's been 13 years since I've been on a horse, but I was taught to use the reins to steer the horse as well. Pull back and down to one side gently to make him turn. How do you turn the horse without using the reins?

You use your heels

Equestrians, especially dressage, use the reins to put the horse threough lots of different movements. The problem is it desensitizes the horses mouth. Like constantly hitting the breaks on your car. Eventually your going to wear it down and they dont work right when you want them to bor. Thats my opinion anyway.

The other thing with dressage is it just doesnt seem right to take this huge animal and use it that way. Like trying to keep him in a tiny box. I don't care for it, and they shouldnt be surprised when the animal rebels at such treatement. Have to let the horse have its way some. It isnt a machine.

Leg pressure. A good rider doesn't even have to touch the reins on a well trained horse.

thats a common technique taught at day riding type places, but if you take a private lesson its a totally different world, both in how you learn and the quality (for lack of better words) horse you will ride.

I wont ride someone elses nag,the only time I ever really ride someone elses horse is if someone my aunt knows needs a horse broke, but I havent done that in a year or so

Well trained being the key term. These were horses used every day by many different people, I doubt they were even used to being ridden by good riders. This is getting me interested again though, I think I'm going to look into finding someplace to ride around here.
