Anybody 6' & under dunk a basketball?

I'm 5'11 and experimenting with different training programs that help increse my vertical. I borrowed a friends video "Maximum Vertical" and I'm using their program that consists of polymetrics and strength training. But I also heard that using wobble boards can really help the vertical. So I was wondering what kind of training programs you guys have gone through or heard about.
 
6' tall here. When I was a buck 60 or less, I was hanging all over the rim. 70 pounds later, I'd be lucky to touch the rim. I never did anything special to train for jumping. I simply played everyday and kept trying to get higher and higher every time I played. I started by slapping the backboard following lay ups, then graduated to actually slamming the ball down.
 
several variables to consider

in addition to vertical. how long are your arms and how large are your hands? if you can palm the ball it is an advantage. im 5-9 and best i ever did was dunk on a nine and a half foot rim. but.... i can still finger roll!:D
 
I just want to be able to touch the rim. I'm 5'9". What's considered a good vertical leap for normal folks? ie. not pro athletes. I'm about 5" away from the rim now.
 
I use to be able to dunk a basketball. I weighed 160-170 at the time and I'm 5'10". I was also practicing snatches and clean & jerks and jumping everyday. My vertical jump at that time was 38 inches. All that jumping took place 25 years and about 50 pounds ago. I haven't stepped in a court in 15 years. BTW, I'm white.
 
I don't jump like PH, but @ 6'3 235lbs or so I can dunk. :)

This kid at my gym drunks at around 5'8. Tiny little kid and makes better dunks than me.

I read an article in a national geographic about a group of powerlifters who supposedly could all dunk from a standstill (despite being more than alittle on the chunky side). Maybe give some powerlifting a try.

I you want to jump high...

squat heavy. I am 6'2" and 320 pounds, and my reach is only 7'10" and I have tested at 39 by a professional strength coach on a vertec or whatever the machine is called. I can dunk a basketball from underneath the hoop and not just drop it it, but really hammer it. To me in order of importance, the most important exercises are narrow stance squats, front squats and lastly hang snatches or full snatches. Honestly there isnt a better feeling than being able to dunk a basketball, well maybe a 700+ deadlift, lol.

sorry dude calling BULLSHIT here is why: if u are 320 lbs and 6 feet 2 inches and having a TRUE 39 inch vert. that eqauls a ton of athletic ability and u should BE IN THE (NFL) NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE ...i read in the sports magazine about top athletes in the BIG TEN confernce THERE WERE ONLY 4 ATHLETES IN EVERY SPORT FROM TRACK TO FOOTBALL TO VOLLEYBALL in year 2002 TO hava 40 inch vert or better and u my friend are just damn heavy for 39 inch vert:mad:
 
There's a powelifter turned olympic lifter named Shane Hammond who is 5'9" and could touch the rim at 380 lbs. He also could squat a bit over 1000 lbs. Some people just have explosive strength. I have strength in my legs but it's not "fast" strength like olympic lifters.

First off, was he running then jumping up to hoop or was he standing still? Lets say he is standing still so, look here:


ok i lets say shane is a propitonal male and then his arm span is about 19 inches, i assume for a man of

that hieght. so he jumps STANDING STILL and touches the rim he has about a 29-31 inch verticle jump. i left a gap open because not 100% sure. for some one that big that is AWSOME. mad props to him, but a 39 inch verticle is FUCKING WORLD

so just think about it and dunking a basketball and a vertical is 2 differnt ball games my amigo
 
I can touch the foam pad on the bottom of the board, I'm 5'8", can't jump worth a damn. But as quick as I am, who needs to jump.

Shane can actually dunk a volleyball standing under the ring, and his vert is around 36inches from memory.

if you have seen how fast he squats 1018lbs, you know he has the power! :D
I haven't seen anyone squat >90% faster - period!
 
So how do i prove it...

How do you want me to prove it? I know a guy with a digital camera that does video, but I don't know how to post video. If someone helps me I will post video footage of me dunking or doing whatever you want.

Thanks for the offer CCJ. I have a powerlifting meet the weekend of Sept 13th and 14th, so I can't do it until then. The reason being that I get jumper's knee so bad I can't walk for days. So say if I go out to play basketball with some friends I have to resist playing really hard or jumping around too much because literally I only get about 5 really good jumps and then I'm screwed. My squat is really coming along so I don't want to hurt myself before the meet.

Anyway when I was tested for vertical(the guy who did it played pro football for years and had a master's in Kines). This guy owned a sports training facility and I was doing strongman at the time, so I was trying to convince him that 1) I was a good athlete and 2) strongman was a real sport. So I had just come from my workout that I had just finished front squats. I walked in from off the street and started talking to him about strongman and how I would like to store my equipment there, and train indoors during the winter. At first he was really snarky with me, and I asked him what he was testing(I knew what he was doing) and I knew a head of time that I could jump(I played BB in high school). So I asked him if I could try it out and he said sure. I reached up on the device and measured my reach and then he gave me two jumps. The first one I didnt hit so high, 35 inches, then I took a second jump and hit the 39 inches. He was so impressed with the jump that he let us train there and had a key cut for me within the week. Eventually he even had his athlete's flipping the 600 tire for strength endurance drills.

Anyway when I hit that mark in the vert test I was training for strongman. I was squatting extremely narrow and very low and really pausing at the bottom and exploding upwards. At that time I could get 300 kgs for 2 or 3 reps. I eventually had to stop squatting like that because of the knee coming too far over the foot. My hang clean was 335, hang snatch 225 and push press was 385. The difference I found was the front squat. Not only did I find it to be a restorative lift, but very important in jumping. I worked up to a triple with 215 kgs. When that started to climb I almost felt more springy and my knees also felt good as well. Anyway that is my vertical story. I'm sorry some of you don't believe it, but I will post some type of evidence after the 13th and 14th of September. To tell you the truth I might believe me either lol.

Gary Taylor at 308 or so could probably jump 50 inches(no joke). He could POWER clean 500. Plus his best squat was 970. Also he ha like the strongest shoulders ever which do play a part in jumping. Most people say he was the most explosive guy ever. If he went back to olympic lifting in his prime he would prob hold the world record for both snatch and c&j.
 
see i am just a realist who doesnt really believe all i hear, until i see Strengthfiend do the 39 INCH VERT some how i wont velieve him. that is just the way i am. YOU just dont say badass #'s without proof. this is very sad

You are a cool bro, so don't take this the wrong way, but just cause a guy has a great vertical or great lifts does not mean they should be in the NFL, it takes more than that. (I am sure you are already aware of this)

I do understand that is a big number for a guy of that size, but there are a lot of dudes on here that can do stuff people would doubt upon first hearing it.

Either way, he said he would post up a vid, so we will see in a couple weeks. No need to get all crazy irritated with the guy, just call BS and ask for a vid.

I am not in the NFL because I never played high school football. At my high school football was tough because there so many good football players and if you didnt start in 9th grade you didnt really have a chance. Not to sound too conceited but I would put my athletic ability against most offensive lineman in the NFL. But alas would never be a good lineman, I have very short limbs and a very poor head for team sports(I hate teammates who don't kill themselves to win). Track and field, basketball, and soccer were what I played. I got a full ride for track(shot put and discus) and walked on and played soccer for two years. I can directly attribute my raw athletic ability to good training and a lot of fast twitch fiber. I have been to nationals in powerlifting, strongman, highland games and track and field. So when this meet is over I will post this video - and in case I forget, remind me.

Dude- lets not get carried away here... talent or ability alone does not make an NFL player no matter how great it is. As for the other stuff... people around here tend to get pissy when people say "national this or that" when people here are anonymous and they don't post up proof, especially since there are a lot of pretty accomplished atheletes around here.

Almost sorry I posted up to help you out vs tiger88s comments, cause I know he has been around for awhile and is a good bro to many.

Either way, maybe you are all this stuff or maybe not, but like PolishHammer said, if you can do something, post up some evidence and you will get props or else quit going on and on about it...

well not playing high school has nothing to do it. the cream always rises to the top bro. look at Michael Lewis from the New Orleanes Saints, he never payed n high school AND THE GUY DIDNT GO TO COLLEGE OR NEVER EVEN PLAYED ANY FOOTBALL EVER. he just was a beer truck driver and was a bad ass athlete and tried out for the team and in last years season he did some awsome things on the football field

soccer and shot putter? WTF i follow the sport of track and field as one of my favorite sports and all GOOD SHOT PUTTERS ALL are huge dudes at usually 6'3 plus and around 275+ and i dont know one soccer player who has talent and the size of a shot puuter....thats a joke.......

when i played hoops and volleyball alot i could dunk
that was 5-11 165 with 38'' vert
but now i don't play very often and i can't dunk any more (i played a couple weeks ago, missed trying to put one back, so i know i'm not getting high enough)
the more you jump, the better you get, the more you run, the better you get, the more you lift, the better you get

Once you have a vert like "38" you will always be able to do it as long as you are in reasonable shape.

I want to see a video to profit your claim. Show me the vert and the dunk. Stand under the hoop or take 1 step and go up with 2 hands.

I am 6' myself. I am white and not blessed with the hops so here is my recomendation. JUMP. Seriously, that is key. Double Jumps with the jump rope, Depth Jumps, and doing jumps in the sand is awesome for the vert. Mix that in with squats, deadlifts, and power cleans and you will see some amazing gains.

2 - What results can you produce that squats, deadlifts, and power cleans will give you amazing gains?
3 - What is your vert?
4 - How long have you trained to increase it?

This is dry infromation and does not imply anything else other than what I have just asked.

i went to high school with a kid who could dunk 180 from a stand still and he never lifted just a genetic freak and he was 6'1-6'2. ran a 4.4 forty w/o training as well. I also had a teammate in college who could put it down with 2 hands and he was 5'9.

Polishhammer, vert is also about fast twitch fibers. its not a coincidence that most people who have good verts are good sprinters, which requires fast twitch fibers. just look at the nfl combine results. u dont see guys running 4.3 40's with a crappy vert. i ran a 4.48 and then a 4.52 40 timed by a jets scout and 5 other coaches and had a 35 inch vert. the more explosive u are the faster u will be and the higher youll jump. i never really trained for the vertical jump much just did plyo's and things but the main goal was my 40 time and my vert still increased.

1. White men can't jump. Or so they say.
2. My sand vert has increased by 6" by doing PC, DL and Squats. I havn't tested results in a gym but it should be just as affective.
3. My current vert is 35". I touch 10'11"
4. I have trained now for many years, but when I saw the biggest gain is when I went from 28" to 36" at 20 years old. That was 8 years ago. I believe the biggest factor was depth jumps. I would also run bleachers and jump rope with strength shoes as well as play beach Vball.

I am currently 2 months deep into my new training program which includes the PC, DL, and squats along with double jumps, depth jumps and 3 days a week in the sand doing various workouts and playing games. I have a 6 month timeline before I decide how well it works but the results so far are promising.

Any more Q's?

My target date is Feb 1st. If this program works I will try and at least provide a pic. I do not have the necesasary equipment but I do have some friends with digital cameras. I understand why you ask though. It is nice to have credentials to back up the talk. If it works I will also provide the workout log.

but im 5'10 270lbs and i can do a toe touch with no "prep" like the cheerleaders do. i have been able to do this since i was in the 12th grade. the school's cheerleading coach begged me to go and try out for U.A.B or Auburn's cheerleading team.

i declined thinking i would seem gay.

now i realized i passed up holding up fit girls butts threw college.

I can touch the rim. I'm 5'9" and very active. I was never a basketball player though. Just baseball and football. I can palm a women's basketball but that is it. I would get rimchecked if I tried to dunk it. I was also a sprint so the fast twitch muscle seems to help with the vertical.

although i couln never do it from a standstill, i can't palm and i need to get up and over the rim to throw it down

do you want me to shot o vid of me missing a dunk? cause that would be embarsing
i will try to find a vid from when i was younger and was dunking

also, i don't do much related to jumping, i have played hoops about twice in the past year, so i'm sure that if i started playing more my jump skills would return

i hope we are on the same wavelenght here
 
Exodus, you missed a golden oppurtunity. They don't actually hold up their butts. It is a litter further forward if you know what I mean. You are right on the love button:)

Haha, funny stuff dude... I would have thought the exact same things though.... Both a cool, and gay opportunity..... BUT, you would have found out the answer to a question I was wondering- do you get to hook up with the girls a lot cause of proximity/time around them/hanging together, OR do they also think you are gay.....

I think most likely there would be more gayness than coolness in the end....
