Any Parents Only Teach Abstinence?

angel, I dont have kids, but I am wondering what I'm going to do too.

The number of abortions if it were really known would shock alot of people. Kids are having sex. They just are not thinking about the consequenses.

Thinking back I know 4 girlfriends who got pregnant before 16 ; and 3 others at 18 or before.....and I know 5 friends who got abortions ; 3 in my own family (cousins etc) and one of them has had more than 1!! This is in my small little world in the midwest. and abortion is illegal in my state!!!! Oh crap , I just thought of another person in my inlaws side of the family who had an abortion too. So thats alot of women who got pregnant, even though not all of them had the child.

Its just so many!!! :(

I dont know what it is like in your state but back in NJ when my children got to the age where sex ed was taught (6/7th grade - too late in my opinion) they were all sent home with a note for the parents. If the parents did not give consent for their child to be in the class then the children did not have to attend that class. They offered some sort of alternative. There was also a place in the note that said if the parent had some sort of questions or comments about the curriculum (it was fairly well outlined) then please let them know. The only part of the curriculum I had an issue with was the part where they taught about steriods. I volunteered to come to class to discuss issues associated w/anabolics if the teacher needed help. I didn't want my children and their classmates subjected to the hysterical media proliferated bullshit and taught REAL FACTS.

The teacher called me and thanked me for my comments, said that in all her years she had NEVER had a parent volunteer to come help teach the class.

Abstinence only is foolish IMO.

Just like saying just say NO to drugs. I think it far more effective to show a kid the autopsied degenerated brain of a clubkid and say, "Hey, it's your choice if YOU WANT YOUR BRAIN FRIED... GO FOR IT!"

I believe a better approach would be to have the class have empathy bellies and the babies that cry at all hours unless you hold a key in them a certain way for X amount of time. Not a substitute for "the real thing" but about as damned near close as one can get IMO.

Regardless, there are some kids that just won't listen no matter WHAT you tell them... I think the odds are better though if you take the "arm the kids with valid information then boost their self-esteem to make them feel THEY are in control of their own destiny" approach.

But as I said, purely my opinion and I could be 100% wrong.

I dont think abstinence only is foolish at all. I just dont think that its for everyone. I have no problem with arming kids with valid information, however. I just support the right of parents choosing what to teach their kids. I agree with everyone lol :)

I think abstinence is more something you demand, not teach.

My triplets are only 9 and my baby girl is 4 but we teach them to make good choices and the consequences of bad choices as well as being responsible for your actions with a good sprinkling of good old honor, respect, loyalty, honesty, and courage. They all know school work before play and fitness is preparing yourself for being able to fight the good fight in all aspects of life. They do calistenics everyday and go to the dojo twice a week. I've started some light weight work with the triplets. A parent can't be with their kids 24/7... we have to teach them to make the right choice on their own.

I am an example for my daughter. Shit I thought I knew it all. When she is old enough to understand sex and the consequences of it, I hope she looks at me and sees all the struggles I went through being a young single mother.

What happens when your little girls are picked up for a date by a guy just like you? :worried:
