Any instinctive trainers out there?

Does anyone out there just make it up as you go? I know you have to be consistent in certain things to progress, but I'm wondering if anyone has been successful training by instinct.

I would think as long as you hit each muscle group regularly, always strive to get more reps or more weight on certain key moves, and have adequate recovery you should continue to grow. It gets boring doing a set routine for months at a time.

If someone has made it work, please list your strategies for success.

I do sometimes. I know my body well... and I know when I need to pull back and when I can step it up. Instintive training was big mojo in the '80s. If you can get a feel for it it serves you well.

It doesn't replace a smart program... but it can help tailor that program to your daily needs.

The "So...what are we doing today?" conversation is a daily thing for our crew. lol

Even then, we each do our own variations and accessory work based on weaknesses.

spatts just reminded me of this with her post;
another part of that type of training was that i would evaluate my weak parts from time to time and just worked that part harder (more sets, reps whatever). real simple approach. but you know what; it worked. not for more than a couple of months though.

:Dlol
Same thing here, except we're a little farther ahead and its usually "so....what are we doing tomorrow?":)

I almost totally use instinctive training. Albeit I do have a set "schedule" for my workouts i normally just feel my way through them when it comes to my exercises i do. I feel that if you stick with your basic compound movements you can make good progress when you change your assistance movements often....it kinda keeps the old body from just adapting. I'm kinda new to this site so for those wondering i'm 6'4 228lbs (i know i need to put on some more weight for my height) 18" biceps and benched 365 for 5 reps last night on my last set (might not sound like alot but try doin' it with arms as long as mine lol)

I work off my percieved maximum 100% 1 rep max for that day

If i am going to squat 80% for a couple reps...that might be 20kgs lighter than the week before because im a bit "out of it today" and might be back to a higher weight next week......but it will still be 80%
