Any Cigar smokers here?

huntmaster

New member
My favorites are Cifuentes Partagas and Macanudos but I usually end up with Swishers due to my College student budget.

I am thinking about ordering some of those Havana Honeys(cigars).----Anyone ever tried 'em?

Thanks.

Been smoking a lot of Punch these days.

Cristo's are nice.
Like Mac's also.
Cohiba's are an all time favorite. They are hard to find.
Partigras are always up there.

Cohiba's are a pet project of Castro's.
His idea under his guidance...funded directly by the cuban goverment.

Used to work in a cigar shop. Smoked all kinds of cuban cigars. Favorite was a toss up between the Bolivar belicoso and the Monte Cristo 'A'.

Cleaner, you know about the Trinidad? It was the successor to the Cohiba as a pet project. For a long time, like the Cohiba, it came in only a Lonsdale shape. I never got hold of one, but apparently they are spectacular.

What my books tell me:

Very similar to Cohiba......

"This is what the world know about trinidad. The brand, or the cigar, because there is only one model, exists. The cigar has a simple gold band with "TRinidad" printed in black ...........The assumption is that the Trinidad was created for Fidel Castro, and only Castro, to be presented to visting dignitaries. Castro has denied the that he initiated such a project. Nonetheless, about twenty boxes of one hundred are produced each month at the El Laguito Factory."

That's the Trinidad alright. Occasionally, you can get ahold of them at auctions in Europe, where they fetch a ridiculously high price. Word has it that he was going to make it like the Cohiba - expand it out into new shapes and sizes, and then start a new pet project.

Cohiba.......

The fabled brand of Cuba, was created in 1968 for the express use of the privileged few - the very few- Fidel Castro and the diplomats and head of state who visted him. Although now wodely available, the legend surronding the brand, its exclusivity, and high price still support its position as the primier cigar in the world......Only the finest finest tobacco leaves from the most select Cuban farms are used in Cohiba's. The tobacco undergoes an extra, flavor-enhancing period of fermentation. The cigar are rolled only by the most masterful and exprienced rollers. Only a relative small number of tehse cigars are ever produced, making them all the more sought after.

Cohibas are wonderful. There was a problem a few years ago - the quality was kinda shot due to the fact that they were so sought after. They weren't being aged long enough, and you could really tell. A friend of mine laid a box o fEplendido's down for 2 years...holy shit were they good. Now they are being aged better since the craze kinda died down.

Trinidads are now produced commercially in, I believe, only the gran panatella size (about 7 inches by 38 ring gauge). Their price is high relative to other cigars of this size and frankly, I don't think they warrant the price. I smoke at least one cigar a day, and would be happy to give you the names of some places from which good cigars (not from Cuba, sorry) are available at solid prices.

Right on Bill. NY has some awesome places for cigars from what I have heard. You guys get the Opus out there, which are nearly non-existent on the west coast. Have you actually smoked a Trinidad? Would love hear about that one.

Huntmaster - cibeau? never heard of it. Haven't checked the thompson's though for quite awhile. How did you friend like it?

Cleaner - it was actually Esplendido, which is the Churchill size for Cohiba. Good cigar.

New York is a great smoking town, but even we have trouble getting the OPUS X. From what I gather, the main shops get about 10 boxes, 3 or 4 times a year. You have to be lucky, or manic about calling the shops every week. Frankly, while I think that the older Opus were GREAT cigars, the current ones, to me have less flavor. I think the Padron Aniversario and the Ashton Virgin Sun Grown (made by Fuente) are far superior to the OPUS X.

I have smoked one Trinidad and didn't particularly see the appeal. I generally smoke cigars with larger ring gauges, so I didn't go into the panatella sized Trinidad with much enthusiasm. I'd smoke a Monte #2, Bolivar Corona Gigantes, Punch DC, Ramon Allones Specially Selected or Partagas Serie D #4 long before one of those again.

yup here's one but only sometimes since those damn cuban cigars are a bit expensive, favourite: Cohiba Lanceros and Montecristo.... here's a sample of my latest lol

I've yet to have a cuban. Stupid embargo! Anything in the Don Lino or Macanudo lines I enjoy. Punches are nice also. Haven't heard of the Havana Honey, if you try it and enjoy it, lemme know.

Shit Freak....you make it down this way let me know.

Cuban are like any other......its all about the wrapper....80% of the cigars flavor comes from the wrapper.

He smokes all of the time and he said it was up there in his top 3 or 4-----but we cant find it in thompsons-----none of the store have it down here, I dont know what the hell is up with it.

Thompsons makes some decent cigars for the buck

Just give me a Good ole Conneticut wraper and keep the humidifer on high to keep it moist and I'm happy as can be...but if the cigar doesn't have a tightly packed filler then I generally pass it up

I've smoked a Cohiba, and several Monte Cristos, but I always go back to buyin' Macanudos...smoothest, lightest flavor, least "after taste," and they burn perfectly!

I like to order from www.cigars-for-less.com because they usually have specials for free lighters, magazines, clearance items, etc.

One time, I smoked a West Indies, Grand Carmella (vanilla), and actually enoyed it, too, although most of the chocolate/vanilla versions suck, IMO...

What size Cigars do yall enjoy???I prefer Churchills with a Ring of at least 34 or higher.

I think I watched to many movies as a child with a Fat man chewing on a fat one...LOL

Monte Cristo has some nice cigars. Any of you like Vintage Cigars??If you do and you ever pass through San Marcos Texas there is a cigar shop in the Town square called the Hill country tobaco store I think???but they have a nice walk in humidor and a good selection of vintage cigars

Damn I still say my favorite cigar is a JR Ultimate in double maduro- Double Corona. Powerhouse of flavor. Its his house brand not a commercial brand but its been awesome for alot of years. Its made in the same factory that makes Punch and El Rey Del Mundo

My favorite cigar would have to be...
An Optimo cut in half, emptied, refilled with some nice jamaican red or skunk, then burned slowly inside a closed area for maximum smokeout.

Maybe you can be my "source" from now on!;) We'll devise secret codes and I'll place my order with you by sending you big bills wrapped in typing paper inside a priority envelope. Are you domestic or international? I need cheap prices so I'm hoping your int.! Don't worry I won't give your name out to anyone!

Hey huntmaster! I just reread your first post. Man, I hate to see a guy smoking Swishers! It just cheapens the whole cigar experience in my eyes.:D Some good cheap cigars that i found have been Royal Jamaica, Te Amo, and.............SHIT brain fart! Can't think of the last one, I'll remember it later.

Like many beginners, I started with and loved Macanudos. They are second to none in construction, but once my pallet developed I just stopped enjoying them. Not enough flavor.

The Opus X is easily the best cigar I've ever smoked. The depth and complexity was absolutely amazing. Plus I felt stoned when I was done. I enjoyed it more than any Cubans I've smoked.

You guys ever go into the cigar shops in places like cancun or puerto vallarta??? i would say they are 90% fakes. I mean, its just unbelievable. Once you know what to look for on the bands is so painfully obvious that they are fakes. I saw a Cuban Hoyo de Monterrey where the red verticle stripes on the band looked like the'd been drawn on with a crayon. www.cigarafficiando.com has a section on fakes that pretty interesting an informative. you can look at fake and real bands side-by-side.

I recently smoked a couple different versions of the C.A.O anniversary addition. I was VERY impressed. There was a box-pressed figurado with a conneticut wrapper that was probably the best cigar I've smoked in over a year. I believe they are from 1998. If you can find one I highly reccomend it.

Two of my favorite cigars are the Padron 1926 #1 Maduro and the Diamond Crown Maduro Pyramid.

Padron makes some killer cigars. I have many Padron maduros in the Annivesario, Millenium and 3 boxes of 1926 in my humidor. YUM YUM

Oh, and the punch Gran Crux maduros rock also....

Cohiba and Macanudo are both great. For a short smoke I enjoy Mini-Partagas. Longer smoke I prefer Arturo Fuente.

Mainly I use my pipe, nothing like some Irish cream flavored tobacco and a nice Guiness the two complement each other perfectly. Also the local smoke shop has a great hazelnut blend.

Cheers,
Scotsman

shit I forgot, you US people cant have access to Cuban cigars, it sucks......

Sure we can. We just have to go to Canada to enjoy them. :)

So far I'm pretty pleased with Montecristo. The last one I bought was a La Corona Whiff. Good flavor and very smooth. My favorite is still the Montecristo Serie V that I tried about 6 months back. I'm far from being a connoisseur mind you (one cigar a month, if that.)

i order my cigars from thompson cigar company.. they have a very nice, very wide selection and my cigars are always in top condition when i get em... i personally enjoy CAO Anniversary Cameroon's... Cohibas are lovely if u can handle the price tag... and since im in Iraq i do par-take in many of cuban cigars ... i use to be an A. Fuente man.... H. Upmanns are good too... and the simple thompson cigar co. brand are great smokes... . just find a tobacco store in your area that sells individuals ... thats a good way to get one you like or to try out

The box is in need of some cleaning and restocking, hope to get to London this month to slake my 'gar thirst:

I have a wicked humidor that was given to me by my dad: he had it made from burl wood back in the early '70s, quite the box...

You need a good humidor , get a pretty one so you can show it off, and a good automatic hygrometer/humidifyer. I love the digital ones that store about a years worth of water and release the water as needed. I moshed mine to hell so I am relying on one of those sponge thangs, they do suck most severely.

This is a first class model.

Don't forget to cruise that site for an affordable humidor.

Take a quick look at humidors/hygrometers here

If you really want something special, you should do the antique thing: my dad spotted an early 19th century Humidor that was used in the captains stateroom of an old Indiamen. Rosewood and teak and lined with tin. A little plack inside that says "By appointment to her majesty... blah blah' very very cool.

I warned him the last time it was home that the fucker should be in better hands... a real gar smoker... he didn't fall for it.

I found one Im eyeing thats not a bad price ,about 80$ ,but the one thing I dont like is it doesnt have a divider, and buying anything out of canada will add a good 30-40% to the price thanks to customs

Ill let ya know how my search goes for that perfect little box

Good call. You can get a very servicable humidor for even less than that. Its the top notch hygrometer/humidifier that you need to sweat (sorry) more than the box for now.

Shite, you could quickly go into the $2500 plus range without looking very far. Its all about the look and size, functionality remains intact after not very much more money than you are spending right now.

Well I havn't smoked any Cuban cigars yet just the ones they sell at the local smoke shop here and my favorite I have tried are Don Thomas Cigars.

say it aint so man,I had a don thomas in niagara falls last weekend and I was disappointed, the taste was shit and it split bad once I got about halfway through it.

Im sticking to partagas and cohibas(just got 5 more from cuba 2 days ago) siglo V yummy

My grand father smoked $.25 Havatampas and said that was for uptown nights only...

:lmoa:

To each his own. For me, the Habana Monte #2's are the best that ever was... I smoke them with great love.

Hello, Darlings,

My absolute two favorite cigars are Montecristo # 2 and Partagas Series D, # 4. They are divine! I have found out many interesting brands though of non-cuban cigars that have an excellent taste/quality/price ratio. Try Padron, the Ecuatorian Hoyo de Monterrey and La Flor Dominicana, all rated 90 by Cigar Aficionado.

Freddie, dear, I know your prediliction for long, thick, dark, smokey things... when you're on a less opulent, but no less saucy tip, may I suggest the Macanudo Maduros? The rubustos or presidente sized are luscious, almost negro oscura quality wrappers, rich, choclolately and yet not cloying or sweet (I HATE that!).

Good smoke, well within middle range budgeteers, and it's dark mysterious wrapper sets you firmly in the fringe... where I know you like it best.

Darling, being a person of the world, I have been "forced" to try different shapes, sizes and flavors. I will tell you all about them sometime.

I have tried the Macanudo Maduros, but they tasted a little too bitter for me. Maybe I should try it again, for fringe sakes.

You know that both you and I could live on Monte Habanas #2s and toss the rest, but if you let the Macanudos get past the 'sickness' you're in for a suprise.

Put them up in a more moist than usual spanish cedar for at least 12 months, 18 is better. THEN hit one. Don't pass judgement on the Presidente size until you have gone past the first inch, then really swish one around, pun not intended.

I go through phases.

Opus X are great.

The regular line of Padrons are great

JR Ultimate are great.

If you're just starting out I suggest the latter.

If you can get the former at MSRP I highly suggest it.

I personally enjoy the Cusano line of cigars and the Helix brand. I've tried all the so-called greater cigars ( Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, H. Upmann) but never enjoyed them.

I tried an Acid 1400 the other day and it tasted like $hit. Kinda like dipping a cigar in Pine Sol then smokin' it. However I also tried a CAO Moontrance and it was excellent.

CAO makes some nice smokes. Lately, I've been taking a liking to Gurkha, Romeo's, Montecristo's, Fuente's, Perdomo's and Cohiba's. Unfortunately, none are Cuban :(

CAO's are nice.

Everyone here needs to try an AVO. I never see them mentioned but I love them.

I think CAO and AVO are both overpriced. Neither make their own cigars (neither company owns a factory the way Fuente and Padron do), which also kind of turns me off about them, and also explains their higher prices (another layer of middleman).

I say go with the JR Ults and Padrons. You won't go wrong.

I had a few Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Imperial Maduro's the other day and they were very nice. The last time I had an AVO was a few months back. I believe it was a #2.

You smoked three in one day?

You must be made of money.

Living in NYC helps ;)

I have about 70 cigars in hand. I try new ones frequently. I'm still new to cigar smoking, so I'm still trying to learn. Chefwide was suppose to be in NYC and we were gonna chill with a few stogies. Not sure what happened to him :o

KB, we must chill soon. The weather is turning nice.

I'm smoking a JR Ultimate Cabinet No. 10 right now. Fan-freaking-tastic smoke. I'd put it up against any $10 stick.

Hey Guys,

My smoke is La Gloria Cuban. I mostly smoke the Corona Gordo but on special occasions my baby is the Series "R" No. 6.

If you haven't tried the La Gloria line of Dominican cigars you are really missing something.

Cigardave007

I'm not a big fan of the Serie R--they are too sweet for my tastes. But probably a good one to try if you are new to cigars.

Well, here are some of my favs. Usually keep 7-8 of each in the humidor...

1. Ashton VSG (Virgin Sun Grown Belicosos and Torpedos

2. C.A.O. Extreme Robustos

3. Davidoff Double R's

Never had an Opus X, but will try one soon!

If it is not full bodied, then I'm not interested!

I need to find Cuban's :(

I just got back from Germany (on vacation) about 2 weeks ago. Cubans are abundant there, but let me tell you something. Quality control on Cubans is hit or miss, even on Montecristos and Cohibas. There are more cigars imported into the US than all of Europe combined. This means that even though the seeds for many of the fillers of Dominicans originated in Cuba, cigars originating in Nicargua have higher, and more consistant standards than Cubans with the US embargo and all. I would like to see the US open up its markets to Cuba though. After a few years, I am sure that Cuba would rectify quality discrepencies, and be the top manufacturer of cigars in the US again.

I got my hands on them back home by just going back to the same humidor (cigar store) and striking up a relationship with the owner. eventually he showed me the secret stash.

cuban montechristo

best cigar ever

as long as u get the real deal

This recently announced product from Cuba has now been released. Guantanamera's are very mild cigars originating from the Vuelta Arriba region, and are very competitively priced. This is the ultimate Cuban cigar for a beginner or for any cigar smoker who likes a very mild and light bodied cigar.

I've had a cuban cohiba, and it was excellent. Surprisingly, I enjoy the Helix maduros. They are pretty mild and great for a beginner like myself. I've also tried excaliburs and macanudos. How long will a cigar hold its flavor out of a humidor? I had a cigar sitting in my drawer in a plastic bag for about 2 weeks before I smoked it, and it was horrible. I was just wondering if it was the cigar or the elements that made it bad.

Well for the a good rule of thumb is don't keep a cigar out of a humidor (or similar container with some kind of humidification device) for more than a week. All cigars should be kept in an airtight container, such as a ziploc bag, until moments before smoking.

So if you mean out of the humidor but inside an airtight container, I'd say one week.

If you mean just in the cellophane (which is permeable to air), no more than a few hours.

I had a Punch Champion today as well as a Fonseca and was delighted, by both. Worth a shot and relatively well priced.

I smoked 2 Opus X 'A's at my wedding, and wow.

I don't really want to smoke anything else ever again.
