Any bartenders out there?

Spend one week in bar tending school and they place you. Or you network and apply on your own.

The guys I know here make about 80K for working three nights a week.

Maybe in Miami... but not in the midwest... shit. None of the good places will hire you without experience... the clubs that people make the big money at, you have to be a dood with like 3 years working in the clubs and have a draw or be a hot chick.

C-ditty

i slang drinks, hope this helps

whoa whoa whoa...
do not, i repeat do not waste your money on bartending school, i have tended bar for well over 7 years here in atlanta, even run my own bar now, trust me, when kids come in with there i went to bartending school, i toss out there app as soon as they leave.
its the biggest rip job going.

if you want to learn how to bartend there is one way to go about it.
find a sports bar or resturant in your area and begin waiting tables.
in the rest. industry turnover is huge, after you get waiting tables down you will(by always taking drink orders from your tables) begin to learn the drinks, then one day when things are slow you will (during the day) be able to get behind the bar and get familiar with how things are done behind the bar, then after some time someone will not show up, you might be in the right place at the right time and theres your chance.

as for the money, yes it is very very good, hours take some getting used to but if you find good sports bar with tons of regulars, know how to act and interact with the customers, are friendly and outgoing, you can make 75-+ a night easily.
me, anywhere from 90+ a night.
allot depends on if you are in big city, big club, what type of sales you do, but dont forget, hours take some getting used to and there is allot of work that goes on behind the bar, allot of little things that always need to get done.
hope that helps:fro: :fro: :fro: :fro:

That is all good and everything but the bartending schools here are only like $300 for the entire week PLUS they place you within one week after class or you get your money back. Instead of waiting tables you go directly to being a bar tender. And they teach you every kind of drink to make, so you don't have to learn by waiting tables.

To each his own I guess.

I think this is the way to go. I've thought about bartending as a fallback while I'm in between contracts....least until the technology job market stablizes. And I don't have time to spend six months waiting tables and barbacking like a college kid.

uh..hate to break it to you fellas, but there isnt a bar in the world that is going to let you, YOU, walk in to there place and say..ok get behind the bar, OVER THE OTHER PEOPLE who all want to get behind the bar, it just dont happen fellas, the hottest chic or the best looking guy with all the tricks, it JUST DOES NOT HAPPEN.

I have been in the industry over 9 years, and I have never seen us or any bar i have worked in ever take a girl or guy off the street and throw him behind the bar, that is where the money is.

ITS CALL PAYING DUES FELLAS.

what i mean is that you have to start on the floor(waiting tables) then you may get a shift during the day or slow night during the week only after you pay your dues.

Depends on the market. Where I live, development is overwhelming....restaurants and bars are popping up like weeds. I know of two guys who went through a two week course and are now bartenders. Granted, they are not full time and will have certain dues to pay, but they are in the door and they are not waiters.

Bartending, while a skill, is certainly not rocket surgery. I've talked to several rest. mgrs and bartenders. Most say that they can teach anyone to bartend. What you get hired for is your personality, intelligence, and drive.

Goodpoint Big, I understand what you mean. Now you could go to bartending school and get placed at Chilies or Outback or something small and get used to it then move up to a big club. And i dont if barbacks make any money but that i heard helps big time in the industry.

Exactly. Even if bar tending school is crap, at least you learn the indgrients to various drinks. I mean, they can't teach you everything or probably beyond 30% of everything, but at least you get some basics down. Then go to some hotel chain or resturant and start small.

The bar tenders here making a killing. One guy I know is 23 and has/had been bartending 2 years part time. He then bought a small house 2 bedroom roommate plan and installed a pool and hot tub. The mornings he spent going to get a massage certificate (not a license - that takes a couple of years, he just got a 3 month class certificate) started doing non sexual massages for $75 an hour in the morning times. Then went and got his ACE PT certificate over the weekend. Turned the small pool house into a gym. Then he started doing one hour PT and one hour massage combos for $125.

He is 23 years old and makes close to $400 in the mornings, and he is paid $100 per night he bartends plus tips which is about another $200-$300. He pulls in about $3000 weekly and 75% of that is cash money.

I did it for a couple years while in school. Believe me, it's hard fucking work -- don't think you're gonna be like Tom Cruise in Cocktail, dancing and flipping bottles around and shit. Most nights you'll be so exhausted by the end of your shift, you'll need to sleep 10 hours just to recover.

I worked at a decent club in my city, I made around $100 a night in tips, plus salary. The girls made about 3x as much, but then again they had to put up with drunk guys hitting on them all night.
Keep in mind, I also worked at two shitty-ass bars prior to the club gig, so I actually had some experience when I was hired.

It was ok, but it becomes more like a lifestyle than a job. I really got to hate it after a while, so I quit. Ok while it lasted, but just not my thing.

def. got to pay your dues...busing to waiting to bouncing to tending bar. its a long food chain.

yeah agree 100%, the lifestyle you get dragged into will definately kick your ass if your not careful, its like you get off at 4am, sidework and cleanup, 6am, well your not tired so you have a few beers, 8am, then you end up at after hours club/party, somene has a line out, few more beers, buy the time you realize it its noon, you go home, crash for a few and back to the bar, next thing you no its 3 days later, BUTTT.. the great thing is you are always hanging out with the people you work with i.e the ladies so that has some perks in it as well:)

great job to have, hard work, good money, but the lifestyle can kick your ass if your not careful.

bigdollar - you make good points in your statements, but I still say that a bartending school is the way to go. True they will not grab you off the street and put you in charge of some hot club, but the school will get you behind the bar at Chili or Applebees or some place like that. Some people don't want to spend many months working up the chain to be a bartender. They want/need something to do NOW if they are unemployed - like a lot of people are. Bartending is just anincome bracket until they find employment again.

Places like Carnival Cruises, Princess, and Majestic will hire bar tenders straight out of the school. Namely because these cruises are normally "all inclusive" at one price and the people there simply do not tip half the time. The bartenders there make $150 flat rate per shift. The tips for the shift for all bartenders and waitresses are pooled together and divided evenly. So you may be lucky to get $200 per day there. But a plus is that you sail and cruise for free and get to eat all the food you care too. The minus side is you are sometimes gone 5-10 days at a time.

Another hot side of Ft Lauderdale is private bartending. Whether on yachts or estate homes. You can come in and make $300 per night provided you proven in the past you know how to keep your mouth shut about what you see going on there. People at house parties never tip, not even the strippers that show up occassionally. But it is an easy job especially when people lose interest in alcohol for "party favors"

And a bonus..
Cigarette Funk permeating every pore of your soul..

Which is why cruises and private parties have a much more appeal to them.

I had worded as a bartender in college and had coincidentally taken the class that AAP mentioned. Although it wasn't the class that got me the job - the job was two years later.

I enjoyed it but your enjoyment can be solely based on where you end up working and finding a job isn't always easy. Knowing someone or having boobs will always be to your advantage.

And yes - the paying your dues part does ring very true.

Best advice - always have a back up plan!

Private parties are good but you dont make much tips, however the parties and people you meet sometimes make up for that.

One thing to remember about cruise ships...usually you have to sign 2,3 year contracts with the company.
And trust me, something tells me its not all tom cruise in cocktail on that resort tending bar...

Allot of the bigger clubs in town that do kick ass numbers its near impossible without knowing someone that works there to even get a shot at working those types clubs.
All who you know I guess.
