Ar15 are not automatic weapons. They are legal to own because they are semi-automatic.
Fully automatic weapons have been illegal to own since the 1920's with out a federal permit which is hard and expensive to get.

You can play with an ar15 clone for about 800-1200. I myself have a Bushmaster XM15a3 flat top heavy barrel with a big ass scope.
M16 are only fun to shoot when you have alot of ammo cause that three round burst goes through the ammo fast.
