Another hour and a half...

I just got a new "daughter." Last year I sort of accidentally got roped into hosting a 16 year old German girl who came to America as a foriegn exchange student... only to have her host family drop out on her at the last minute. I was single with n/kids... so I wasn't the typical pick for a host "dad," but I knew the coordinator... and it was either me or send her home. The situation worked out so well I decided to do it again this year.

My new daughter is a total gem... a really good smart kid with a great attitude... but also with all the insecurity and apprehension of any 16 year old in a new school... a new country... etc... She's worried about being able to make friends, to be able to do well in her classes. Basically just about anything a 16 year old can be a bit afraid of.

I felt a little like I was dropping off a kindergartener this morning when I took her in for her first day of class. She had that same big eyed slightly scared look that takes a big chunk out of your heart.

She really wants to play volley ball this year. I had brought her in on Friday before school started so she could try out for the team. She was really excited she made the first cut. Today, she and five other girls are competing for three slots on the team. She gets home in another hour and a half... and this is a very long afternoon waiting to find out if she made the team.

Hippedy, it is a totally new experience for me to have my heart in my socks all afternoon about whether or not a 16 year old girl makes the volley ball team. It really makes me appreciate what life is like for long term parents.

awasome brotha! so let us know if she made the team.

Is this just a foriegn exchange student staying with just you??

It seems like it will be an extremely insightful experience and great oppurtunity. To have the perils of parenthood, but only for a limited time. many lessons can be taken for this I bet.

I hope she makes the team!

Yaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sunny just called from my girlfriend's shop.

:D :D She made the team! :D :D

This is really stupid to admit, but I asked my wife to look after her today and be her guardian angel.

Thanks Thia!

congrates brotha. Gotta love caring people in this world. Seems around me everyone is selfish and looking out for themselves.

That's cool man.

On a slightly different note, and not to detract at all from your happiness, but are you even a little concerned that she'll go off her rocker and accuse you of sexual abuse? Shit like that can ruin a guy's life whether he's acquitted or not.

Sweet dude... It is good to see someone who actually gives a shit... and in your case, 2 shits!! :)

It's always hard for someone to move somewhere and get accustomed with their surroundings... you seem to be doing a good job helping her. ;)

She is such a good kid. :)

There are several other girls here from Germany. We had a picnic with the other families on Sunday. Most of them are little gems. There was one girl, though, who was obviously emotionally troubled... a bit of a lost soul... and so sad to be here. (Her parents made her take part in the program.) When I picked my girl up today... she asked me if I had the girl's phone number on the parents form. I said yes. She told me she wanted to call the girl and ask her how her first day went... and how she was feeling. She knows the girl is very alone right now and needs a friend.

Like I said... I've got such a good kid.

I'm glad to hear your experience is going to well mate.

I can only imagine how hard it must be to see them go back to Germany though :(

Great story Sofa. It warms the heart to hear stuff like that.

i hope you continue to get great joy from her for however long she stays with you.

You're a good man bro.
