Thursday, July 24, 2008
PHOENIX — Officials say three people were shot at a community college in Phoenix.
Fire department division chief Mark Faulkner says a 25-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman wounded at South Mountain Community College are in critical condition, and a 17-year-old boy is in stable condition.
Faulkner says the three were taken by firefighters to a county hospital.
The shooting happened around 4 p.m. No information on the shooter was immediately available.
Student Yessenia Lara, 18, said the shooter was one of two men who had been fighting in a computer building. She said the gunman seemed to be aiming his shots, not firing randomly.
Officials reached at the college did not immediately have any information on the shootings.
An electronic sign outside the school said classes were canceled Thursday and students could be seen leaving the campus calmly.
Television footage showed police clustered outside one building.
Situated at the base of Phoenix's South Mountain, the college has more than 8,000 students each year. Its student body is made up mainly of people seeking two-year degrees.
