An honest discussion, just how bad is marijuana on the brain?

Weve all seen the stereotypical stoner and how he talks slow and acts stupid and all that. I want to know if I get baked once or twice a week if I will end up like that typical stoner all the time. Or is acting stupid and stuff just confined to when you are high, then the next day or whatever everything is back to normal even if you have a habit of getting baked a couple times a week long term?

it depends on what you do when you smoke, I watch t.v. like tlc, discovery channel, history and animal planet. I would say getting BLAAAZED has been informative.

MARIJUANA CAUSES BRAIN DAMAGE

Critics state that marijuana has been shown to damage brain cells and that this damage, in turn, causes memory loss, cognitive impairment, and difficulties in learning.

THE FACTS

The original basis of this claim was a report that, upon postmortem examinations, structural changes in several brain regions were found in two rhesus monkeys exposed to THC. 51 Because these changes primarily involved the hippocampus, a cortical brain region known to play an important role in learning and memory, this finding suggested possible negative consequences for human marijuana users.

Additional studies, employing rodents, reported similar brain changes.
However, to achieve these results, massive doses of THC - up to 200 times the psychoactive dose in humans - had to be given . In fact, studies employing 100 times the human dose have failed to reveal any damage. 52

In the most recently published study, rhesus monkeys were exposed through face-mask inhalation to the smoke equivalent of four to five joints per day for one year. When sacrificed seven months later, there was no observed alteration of hippocampal architecture, cell size, cell number, or synaptic configuration. The authors conclude:
"while behavioral and neuroendocrinal effects are observed during marijuana smoke exposure in the monkey, residual neuropathological and neurochemical effects of marijuana exposure were not observed seven months after the year-long marijuana smoke regimen." 53
Thus, 20 years after the first report of brain damage in two marijuana-exposed monkeys, the claim of damage to brain cells has been effectively disproven.
No postmortem examinations of the brains of human marijuana users have ever been conducted. However, numerous studies have explored marijuana effect on brain-related cognitive functions. Many employ an experimental design - in which subjects are given marijuana in a laboratory setting, and then compared to controls on a variety of measures involving attention, learning and memory.

In a number of studies, no significant differences were detected. 54 In fact, there is substantial research demonstrating that that marijuana intoxication does not impair the retrieval of information learned previously. 55 However, there is evidence that marijuana, particularly in high doses, may interfere with users' ability to transfer new information into longterm memory. 56
While there is general agreement that, while under the influence of marijuana, learning is less efficient, 57 there is no evidence that marijuana users - even longterm users - suffer permanent impairment. Indeed, numerous studies comparing chronic marijuana users with non-user controls have found no significant differences in learning, memory recall or other cognitive functions. 58

Having observed a few people turn their life to shit, I'd say alcohol is way out in front of anything else because of the perniciousness of the addiction.

The most deleterious effects of weed are spiritual. If you have your mind in the stars it will take you to a higher level. If you have your mind in the gutter you will debase yourself. If you are lazy you will get lazier. If you are dumb you will get dumber.

Our drug culture is dumb. Weed is best not used to get fucked up, but in small amounts it's useful to thought. It is meant to be used not abused. I haven't smoked it in a couple of years though. I don't have a suitable living arrangement for horticultural pursuits.

It doesn't do any physical harm to the brain that can't be remedied by quitting it. I would never say it is not a dangerous drug though.

It all depends on the person. I know older people, parents of friends of mine, who have been smoking for 30 years and everything is fine in their lives, they are academics and businesspeople and shit is cool. I know other guys from high school who stay at home and peer through the venetian blinds all day. People who don't have problems with it seem not to have addictive personalities. They can take it or leave it and don't smoke that much. The people who get fucked up smoke it ALL THE TIME. I think they would have got addicted to something anyway, that's just the way they are, better weed than booze a thousand times.

HELL YEAH! :D Nothing beats watching cartoons like my favorite Looney Toons while high!

Superdave, let me sum it up, and if one disagrees then they are completely misinformed, basically what I'm saying is this is the answer to your question.

Just how bad is herb on the brain?

Its not bad at all. Any information saying that herb has a negative effect on the brain was put out and funded by the government. A while back studies were done on monkeys(1950's I believe) where they were given huge amounts of herb, the carcinogens and smoke alone would cause any man(or animal) to become "out of it" or "dazed", anyway, from this experiment the govt. exploited the results which were backed by NO scientific evidence whatsoever and said "marijuana kills brain cells", herb has nothing to do with brain cells whatsoever.
Also, if one is stupid or slow when High then that person was already stupid or slow, herb enhances, not the opposite, herb is not supposed to be used to get stoned and retarded, its intent by God was to help your thoughts elevate to a different plane of thinking, if those who use it and abuse it for personal and party purposes then the negative results they receive, whether it be sleepiness or slowness, are well deserved. peace
