They are also the most modest generation.
My father never said a word about his service. I had to figure it out on my own and was in college before I could appreciate him.

Wait a minute? Your fathers were old enough to serve in WWII??? My grandfathers served and I am 37.

:whatever:

and what is the relevance of the uber nerd painting toys in the first clip?

Well, I'm talking about the dude who coined the phrase. Wasn't it Tom Brokaw? You can't call your own generation the greatest.
I may go with the greatest living, but there were plenty of generations before that had to go through more hardships.

I have nothing but mad props for dad. Lived through the depression and volunteered right after Pearl Harbor, was ets'd at Great lakes in 1946 and didn't set foot on friendly soil the entire time.

My dad was an original playa. He was ten years older than mom. My mom was 39 when I was born and my dad was 49.

AH, almost the age of my baby's parents. ....37 and 49

My grandfather on my mom's side fought in both the Korean War and in Japan during WWII. My grandfather on my dad's side fought in the Battle of the Bulge. When he came back to the States he had to go into a VA mental hospital because he kept having flashbacks and screaming about the "poor children." When they released him, he shot himself in the head with a shotgun. My dad found his body.

They spent 35 years together and my father's brother served in the 101st in WWII. He was an alcoholic.
