amount of calories burned while sleeping

Ok, I have been pondering this for a while now. Just how many calories do you burn while sleeping? To frame my question, take this example/question:


suppose your basal metabolic rate is 2000 calories (200 lbs x 10) and by 11 p.m. you have only eaten 1500 calories, would you be able to eat a 500 calorie meal 1 hour before bed and still be in good shape for fat loss?
(supposing you eat under your TDEE instead of your BMR to lose fat)


If the answer is yes, then that means your body is still burning a good bit of calories per hour just by being alive. If the answer is false, then obviously one would have to ponder how the basal metabolism works.
 
Just concern yourself with having a slow releasing protein before you go to bed. You'll be okay. cottage cheese would do the trick as your body otherwise goes 8 hours with no food source
 
sorry for the long delay...thanks for the calorie calculator link :). Apparently, you burn more calories while sleeping than I thought. I guess my friend who told me 50 needs to rethink his inks ;) .

Fat loss happens over a longer time frame than a single day. You're much better off looking at weekly caloric intake than daily. This basically eliminates the need for an answer to your question.

Yes, a 500 kcal meal would be fine. Obviously though, you'd not want to absorb this all at once, so I wouldn't use a protein shake for this. Lean Steak or Pork would be a much better option as it would take longer to digest.

- RMR(resting) is more accurate, but more of a pain to figure out. Caculators make it much easier now,(not 100% accurate, but close enough)
BMR is just guessed RMR with daily life energy needs factored in(like walking around).
