I transferred an AR to a buddy last week at an old redneck gun shop and he bought their last box of. 223 for $20. I used to get Remington. 223 at wally world for $6/box.

Just to name a few. All do not have .556 in stock nor are their prices allways the best but when they do their a reliable source.

I stopped at cabelas and got 6 boxes of steel case herters @ 6.99/ box.

My advise is reload. If you acquire the components over time its a little cheaper and you can make your own homebrews.

Is it theoretically possible to make your own ammo from scratch? I'm assuming it would take some serious equipment and access to not necessarily common materials. Plus I'm sure there's some legal issues.

short answer? Yes...but machine shop equipment is expensive, and unless you were making it in bulk to sell you'd be spending more than you save
