Americans, why do you applaud...

...after watching a movie at the cinema?

Do you do that in your home as well? After watching a rental DVD do you all give the TV a big hand and shout "yeah, woo, right on brother!"

I get DVD's off the street, you know the one's where you can hear the guy sitting next to the camera eating his popcorn, at the end of the movie when the credits roll the audience always start clapping and yelling?

Watched 'Red Eye' last night, there's the scene where the plane lands on your everage internal flight and what does everyone do, they start clapping!

weird

I've been at movies where people clap at the end. Usually when the movie was good, or so bad that people were glad it was over.

I clapped when I went to see Walk the Line

I can't comment because I don't go to movies. All the people would get on my nerves. And I don't like that phony clapping bullshit. I'm definitely an outsider looking in. People's behavior amuzes me.

of all the movies i've been to in my life, i'd say 2 were applauded... where the hell do y ou foreingers get your information???

I have bore witness to this phenominon. It's weird. I've never had the urge to clap before or after a movie, but I've been there when it happens. Here are the movies in which this has happened to me: Starwars I-II-III,and Harry Potter-Goblet of Fire.
I thought it was a freaky Jersey thing.

I've only been to one movie in a theatre where people applauded at the end. We Were Soldiers was the movie and I was crying my eyes out anyway so the clapping didn't seem weird at the time.

It's not just individuals, it's the whole audience, maybe they're all sitting there with their video cameras and it's like a collective wave of relief "yeah, woo, that one's in the can."

I reackon there be more closet movie clappers out there.

LOL good point

I've seen it happen at some family-type movies when there are a lot of kids in the audience and the bad guy gets it. A rare thing.

I've only seen it once at the movies and thought it was stupid.

Have experienced it alot more on international flights when the plane lands. No one ever applauds when the plane manages to get up in the air which is the amazing thing about flying. They only applaud when it hits the ground (runway) which is what it would do anyway if you turned the engines off. People are stupid. I guess that is why they write 'This is not a step' along the edge of the wing.
