American Lit Help!!!

Search about the different types of writings each did and juxtapose them to modern day authors and perhaps how others adapated and how they made the mold for the future.

You'd do better searching the net or asking a math teacher then asking the fucking idiots over here.

in stark contrast to to a post typical of "the fucking idiots" is this brilliant gem of literary information.

I have to write on how Poe, Irving and Theoreou contributed to modern writings. I really don't know where to begin and I need to have this thing in by tomorrow. Can anyone help an idiot out?

Hi MaGilicuti,

I'm just curious what kind of class this is for. You said modern, do you mean today or do you mean "M"odern, as in American Modernism. The authors you mentioned are usually considered American Romantics, and I have a great book with all three called the Romantic Movement in American Writing. If you want some great quotes from it, I can help. It has a lot of essays and such on and by each author, and I think it may be out of print.

For Thoreau, just look up anything on Don Henley and all that Walden woods crap, and you can have 800 essays written instantly, having to do with contempo environmental issues, etc., etc. It may be boring as shit, but it whatever works.

its an american literatue class. i don't know why he wants us to compare to modern writings. i don't know how i'm gonna bullshit 4 pages on this topic

Any specific modern writers that they contributed to? Just thinking about this for the five or ten seconds that it took me to read this thread, you could make a connection between Poe and Dean Koontz and Stephen King. You might also be able to make a connection between Thoreau and the lost generation writers like Hemmingway.

If this is for a lit class I hope to god you're not writing about Dean Koontz.

What exactly are you defining as modern? Koontz or Hemingway? There's a pretty big distinction.

If you think of it formally: you can imitate Hemingway, in fact there are national contests where people submit stories in the style of Hemingway. There is no such thing for some mystery writer like Dean Koontz. You can say the same for Irving, Poe, and Thoreau as you can for Hemingway. You might want to concentrate on why this is true, and how, formally, the authors are all connected to one another and to contemporarily valid authors as a whole.
