American English

Tell me, what the fcuk does that even mean?

Old man’s away on business so I’m dragged in as representation to my half brothers parents evening, during which we meet with his ‘English’ teacher where the subject of spelling and pronunciation is raised. Todd, has been correcting my brothers spelling from the correct English spellings to the bastardised American spellings, a subject I feel quite strongly about considering I spent the first 20+ years of my life learning how to use the language properly. Todd explains that the schools policy is to teach American English and that AE is now the most commonly accepted spelling, to which I explain in no uncertain terms that he’s talking out of his flabby American arse. It transpires that Todd actually has no idea about the roots of his language and happily spreads his particular brand of ignorance with every swish of his red marker pen. In short, he typifies the average yank that believes the rest of the world should stoop to the American standard.

Looking at how common 'American' seems to be morphing towards the language used by the societies lowest class, we’ll all be communicating through grunts and screeches within this century if wankers like Todd keep it up.

Well if you really want to get THAT into it even the whole "American English" is being used wrong seeing that America is a continent not a country and in the American continent people talk English, Spanish, French, Portuguese and more... so there is really no such thing as "American English"

That's interesting.

Which variant of English eliminates apostrophes from the possessive forms of nouns such as "school's" and "society's"?

As a polylingual person (3 languages) who speaks English as a second language, I've got some insight into the language to offer.

I've noticed that some of the U.S spelling changes are phonetically correct, and make more sense than the original English (U.K) source.

For example, English speakers very often pronounce their S's as if they were Z's. Many U.S spelling conventions now reflect this pronunciation, which to me is a reform rather than a bastardization.

As for pronunciations, in some cases U.K speakers are right (been: "ben" clearly being a degradation of the proper pronunciation), in some cases the U.S. speakers (stumped for an ex at the moment, but there are a couple), and in some cases (like schedule, silent h over here, silent c over there) it's a toss up.

Oh and the U.S "I used to" (I yoost to) is just awkward sounding as hell. The U.K "I did do" just makes more sense.

I thoroughly enjoyed this post.
However, I'm afraid you're behind the times. It is already common practice to gear the language used in schools, media, and official correspondence toward the lowest common denominator.
It is my dear hope that one day we will all know the proper usages of "forgot" and "forgotten".

One piece of information is missing - in what country is this school located?

Apparently Jay was just looking to rant rather than open a discussion. Too bad. Thought this was a fascinating topic.
