Am I prejudiced?

gymtime

New member
On the way to work this morning, I saw the following:

Late model Escalade, white, shiny chrome rims and trim, performance tires, limo tinted windows, and the license plate that read "SMOOOV1".

I instantly assumed the driver to likely be a black male. Never was able to confirm this however.

Am I prejudiced?

So you never met the owner before, but just from the ad, you judged that he was black....

.... yes, you are prejudiced...... but in general, I'd say you were correct.

Yesterday I saw a white Escort GT with smoked windows and a license plate that said BIGPMPN45. I can only assume the 45 stood for Colt 45.

Could this have been Jay-Z?

I thought they only allowed 8 chars max?

it bums me, because it means that I'm on letter off for doing "SMOKECOCK" and entirely too many to make "ISMOKECOCK"

at least there is still "FLACCID" and I know I will be the only person in north america with that license plate. once I get it. no sense getting it now since I don't own a sports car - on my car it would just look weird.

Jay-Z does not ride around in a escort!

he cruz's in a brown 1984 Chevy Celebrity, get it right jerkface

if you see a small compact car with a sparkly paint job and those low profile tires that stick out really far.. and alot of gold plating all over the wheel wells.. and some chrome siloettes of women all over it.. you might be onto some mexies!!!

I was driving around in a 1989 two toned green and tanned Bronco XLT, with a busted head light, no air conditioning and those fake sheep skin seat covers. Yesterday I bought a 1995 Black, Chevy Camaro, leather interior and T-Roofs. What does that make me? See if you all can use your powers of deductive reasoning on this one.

I was going to say a resident of Maryland, but your location says otherwise.

No you are not prejudice. You are just going on stats. If you saw a Chevy Z71 with a sticker that said country music is great and a license plate that said "COWBOYUP" you would assume that it was a white redneck driver.

I would assume that. However, that still makes me prejudiced.

After the events of this morning, I need an affirmation that I'm not a bad perthon. :bawling:

Why does that bother you? You made an assumption based on what you experienced in the past. We all do it whether we like it or not.

I agree. I think everyone's prejudiced to some degree. It's human nature IMO. I just wondered what others thought about it.

i wouldn't say you are guilty of being prejudiced. I'd say you are guiltiy of using stereotypes... which we all use.

Don't be silly. You were just drawing a conclusion based on what you saw. If it turned out to be a black male, and you started shouting, "Stay away from me you violent repeat criminal offender!!! I have cooties!!" Then I'd tell you that you are prejudiced and in need of better hygiene.

You might be sexist tho, did you ever think about that? It could've been a black female. lol. ;)

Yeah, exactly. All I have to do is say SMIB, and NB immediately thinks of mullets and '78 Trans Ams.

Not exactly the guilt-evading affirmation I was hoping for, but it'll do!! :D

And as NB has decided to split semantic hairs with me, he's probably right. Maybe "prejudiced" isn't the right word.

well, since many black people have adopted the non word "smoov" into their vernacular I don't think you are too far off base GT.

Its like when I hear hip hop on the radio. I can't see them, but i know they are black.

Exactly. So the question is though, "Is that bad?" Does this admitted surrender to stereotype represent some sort of flaw in our thinking? In our character?

I agree with nature boy on this too. Heck we all do that bro. Stereotypes are forcefed to us by the media.

human nature to see patterns and to group.

it is safer for us to see a lion eat someone we know and then assume that all lions are something to avoid than it is for us to think that particular lion might have just been having a bad day, and that we shouldn't categorize them all as bad.

But weren't we all taught as kids that stereotypes were baaaaad? I'm sure I saw this several times on Sesame Street.

Look, based on a stereotype, you Pre-Judged the race of the owner without all the facts.

This doesn't make you a bad person, or mean that you Hate a certain race, per se.....

....... but what it does mean, is that you made a conclusion that was not based on all the facts..... meaning that is was possible that you are incorrect.

As long as you realize that you 'could' be in error, then there is nothing wrong with it.

Stereotyping is a survival mechanism that all humans possess. I wouldn't stress over it.

Eh, not stressed really. I just think it's interesting how we humans tend to punish ourselves for what is often in our nature.

Being an Arkansas resident, it always cracks me up when people get cracked on for being white trash or hicks when they're from someplace like Maryland. :D

I'm pretty sure every state has it's own, but maryland has it's own variety. With a style and lingo and accent all it's own.

OK, while I have to admit that that does sound like the cast of "Mantasy Island," I still take exception to your tone.
