Alternatives to prison...

I say that a criminal should receive the same level of crime committed against them, and televise it.

example, a person kills someone by strangulation the same is done to him/her and it's televised.

Rape someone, well you get the idea..

would this be fair?? or would it be distasteful and too much punishment for someone??

No thanks

naw, they cut off peoples hands and have been doing that type of punishment for 1000's of years..

and don't forget the stonings..

t think equal isnt punishment enough. i would rather be raped than spend a year in jail. jail is a pretty strong punishment.

Really there are three solutions.

Keep them in prison and we all pay for it. Release them back into society and we all pay for it. Execute them.

I've been a victim of violent crime. I have close friends and family who have been victims of violent crime. I opt for the third choice. Follow the rules or pay the price. I am tired of innocent people being raped and murdered, all because people believe that criminals deserve leniency.

In the end innocent people are the ones who ultimately suffer.

what if what if

that happens anyhow, no system is perfect.

well.....if they are wrongfully accused and imprisoned, then they can fight back through court...if you kill em, then what good will that do them.

Also, you are proposing to kill someone who kills or give same punishment. Isnt that the very system that you guys oppose in Saudia Arabia?

What happens if someone steals? you still back from him? lol

or if someone rapes? you rape him back? lol

I wasnt endorsing any particular punishment I was commenting on our system being too lenient on criminals.

Yes. I agree with this.

what's ur take on prisoners coming out of the big house worse that they entered it?

What's ur take on innocent people going into jail and coming out bad mother fuckers because of what they had to do to survive?

someone needs to really look into the penal system. Frankly, it's shit. Kill or be killed in there.

The purpose of prison is punishment and serving justice, not trying to rehab or any of that. The problem with prison now is that there is no emphasis on making the prisons safe for prisoners to serve out their time. And really no one cares about that because, after all, they are criminals. I think there should be stratification based on severity of the crime they are convicted of. Murderers get housed seperate from rapists who are seperate from robbers who are seperate from white collar, etc.
That way the kid who is serving a mandatory minimum for slinging weed is not fucked with by the guy who raped and murdered someone.

I wish we could go back to corporal punishment.

Public lashings in the middle of town
Death penalty = firing squad the day of the conviction if no appeal is brought

Prison = no priviledges at all. No TV, gym, rec time, hell complete confinement in their cell even while eating. Only time they could be let out of their cage would be for medical reasons, parole hearings, etc

The repercussions (or lack thereof) of our judicial system is IMO the reason why we have so many of the problems today. Incarceration no rehabilitation. Well maybe one chance at rehabilitation (depending on the severity of the conviction) then if you fuck up again, no chance at rehab only the cage.

no you're wrong.

Purpose of prison = punishment + rehab, so when they're out they'll be able to function in society and not go back to prison. Otherwsie, they will serve their time, come out and kill again. What's the point then?

i like the idea of forced labor, ala the gulag.
education through labor, with rewards for being a good worker

Not all of us oppose the system in Saudia Arabia. I've read quite a bit about Islamic law and some aspects of it are very appealing. This is not to say I agree with every aspect of their legal system.

Especially their business law rules. I fund their legal concepts utterly amazing.

Depending on the type of crime of course, there should be some form of rehab. Otherwise, the people who get released will continue to be a problem to society.

Just based on the statistics I see though, a large majority of them do not change.

There was a new article recently that showed violent criminals have a cluster of genes and scientists believe that this may be one of the links to criminal behavior. If so, I would think that it may be next to impossible to change them.

I actually agree with you to a point. My theory is we should bring back public execution, preferably by guillotine. It should be public, it should be humiliating, and it should be horrifyingly gruesome. I think it should be televised and I think watching a public execution should be mandatory for young high schoolers.

I absolutely think a public spanking or a day in the stocks might do more to straighten out some of young would be criminals than any amount of detention time in juvenile hall.

Unfortunately, regarding your idea on prisons. I live in Pennsylvania and that's exactly what was tried in Eastern State. Solitary confinement spent in contemplation of the bible, no speaking, no contact with anyone, was the conditions the prisoners were kept in there and they had an appalling number of them go insane.

No. It means they most likely cannot change, another good reason to keep them locked up.

No sympathy from me.

Maybe that could be used as another form of deterrent.

Wanna go insane? Then don't get arrested lol

only to someone that values freedom.. if you were hungry and needed an operation.. 3 square meals a day and free medical and dental looks pretty good..

sorry my friend, in the early 80's studies were released that supported the idea that rehab was not possible, and all funding for that was dropped significantly. only at the state level, and country club prisons can you get rehab services, if a person is sentenced for federal crimes, they do all the time, and no rehab..

you got it habibi.
Many people who commit crimes are not taught to function. Some peeps get out of prision being wonderful people.

There are exeptions like pedophiles and serial killers. They cannot be rehabilitated

what about drug sellers. should we sell drugs back to them as punishment?

sign me up.

hmmmmmmmmmmm good point. Now you have 3 good points ;-)

Drug dealing should not be a crime, in my opinion

here's one, how about we induce a chemical coma, and simply put them in isolation.. say for 5-20 years, when they come out, their physical being will function, however the muscle tone will be very little..

Forcing them into a 1 on 1 extended conversation with Lestat on his many philosophies on life is one alternative. Certainly unusual, possibly cruel. :)

We should all be imbedded with microchips and tracking devices. There should be cameras everywhere. Even in our homes. There should be checkpionts every few blocks or so. And we should have to file a daily activities report to the government on a bi weekly basis.
