Alright.....MBA degre...lets talk about this again....

Those degrees mean precisely jack shit.

Someone wil undoubtedly post that MBAs make more money than non MBAs. It;s as relevant as saying professional athletes make more money than non-professional atheltes.

Education is not power. Knowledge is. and it comes from anywhere.

the idea of going to school to learn about business makes as much sense as using a violin to predct the weather.

EXACTLY!

Let's hear from you MBAs out there that didn't get a significant pay raise and or have it open doors for you - otherwise shut the fuck up. If the masters and doctorate degrees were worthless, why would anyone go through the effort of attaining one?

If you want to get a high paying job like a Chief Information Officer, Chief Technical Officer, VP - Information Systems, IS Director you will probably be required to have a masters degree bc the competition is high for those jobs. Everything that sets you apart helps.

and if you want the real money...you'll own that business and all those people instead.

I went out for Mexican last night, and when I came home I took a fiery dump. 4 MBAs came out.

That's the approx value of the degree.

If you are only chasing the money, go to a top 5 school.

Otherwise, tomorrow, I'll scrape oput my urinary tract infection, get a few more MBAs for you and you can have one.

I dont think we get your point, tell us how you really feel next time.

Like Matt said. If you're going to get an MBA in Finance and want to chase the money a Top 5 School is the only way to get in.

If you want to climb the corporate ladder you need an MBA. However a straight academic MBA with no real world experience is gonna be pretty worthless. Most of the top schools have a minimum requirement of work experience post-undergrad. For those with only a BS/BA you are not going to progress nearly as much as if you get a more advanced degree thats just the simple truth.

I guess the initial question was mis-interpreted.

If you are already working and have opportunity to increase your salary or move up in the corporate ladder, then MBA is DEFINETELY a smart choice.

However what MattTheSkyWalker had in mind was whether MBA would give an advantage over a bachelors degree. In today's saturation of the market by overeducated underexperienced people, MBA is worth almost nothing!

I personally see some value in an MBA when we are talking about status etc... However, when you look at this prospectively, it really doesn’t matter if you have an MBA or not if you have the connections in the business world – networking.

For your own sake, get the MBA and see from your own prospective what it does to your future – no one can tell you because everyone has different experiences. Personally I hold an MBA and a doctorate (CPA and all the 9-yard certifications) but I find that going into start-up ventures of my own makes me way more money then using the degree to be a middle-manager. Overall, the MBA etc... has done absolutely nothing for me in running my own business – except the vast accounting knowledge that I acquired from my accounting studies (and of course it makes a nice wall piece). I think MattTheSkywalker said it best “...the idea of going to school to learn about business makes as much sense as using a violin to predct the weather.” Like him, I always believe that you either HAVE it or you don’t, just like you’re either born a leader or you’re not.

I have and MBA and an MIS. I get to tell other people what to do and they bitch about it. I laugh at them and tell them to do it or die.

Life is weird that way.

Depends on what you want to do. When I got the MBA I was heavy into financial work. I got the MIS when I thought I wanted to be a DBA or VP of IT. I really just want lots of money and a nice place on the beach.

I can understand where most of you are coming from.......I use about 20% of what I learned with my undergrad in my current job....but guess what, I would of never of gotten this job without the degree. I have work experience and thought (like reverex said) that the MBA would help me break out of what I currently do.

I think another difference amoung us is the perception of the amount of money that will make one happy. I, myself, could be happy with much less than some of you......I'm not looking to be a millionaire....I just want to get to 6 figures on my own without my wife (lol)......I don't know many engineers that do that.

Also, to touch on what bignate said about owning your own business....i do....albeit small, it is the biggest pain in the ass and causes me more stress and headaches than anything I have ever had to deal with. It directly effects my family in a negative manner.....the money it brings in is not worth it. I could not see myself as a large business owner.....only if I am the only one I have to worry about.
