Alright.....MBA degre...lets talk about this again....

Those degrees mean precisely jack shit.

Someone wil undoubtedly post that MBAs make more money than non MBAs. It;s as relevant as saying professional athletes make more money than non-professional atheltes.

Education is not power. Knowledge is. and it comes from anywhere.

the idea of going to school to learn about business makes as much sense as using a violin to predct the weather.

I agree that degrees and certifications do mean jack shit from a performance and capabilities point of view, but in the this job market, at least where I live, every recruiting ad for management or finance says: "MBA or CPA preferred (or required)".

When I hired a middle mgmt level finance person last year, I shied away from CPAs. I don't want one. I wanted someone who could think on their feet, had a good work ethic and was most of all, intelligent.

I ended up hiring a 25 year old who had limited experience compared to the 500 other resumes I received, but this person has excelled in the job. By the way, amongst those resumes I received, were 2 CPAs who I worked for when I was working my way up, who were both out of work for more than a year.

That being said, you may find that if you are looking to move to a new company in a new role, the people in charge may require some type of advanced degree.

I come on here and flame MBAs all the time. I flame lawyers too. Both groups deserve it.

These walkouts continue and I'll start hosing doctors as well. :)

MBAs from top 5, top 10 schools will open doors to high income jobs. I meet with a lot of fionance people and the ones that make the really big dollars all are from Standford, Wharton, Harvard, etc. They do very well.

The competition at those schools is going ot be ridiculously tough. Better be a half-black quarter-eskimo HIV-positive astronaut if you want to go.

My problem with an MBA (or any advanced degree except medical/scientific ones) is that the two years it takes to earn can be spent doing things that are so much more helpful than going to school.

I see a lot of people about my age (I'm 27) who want to go back to aschool and get an MBA. ANd it;s like - they don't like how their life is going, so they figure they can put their lives on hold for 2 more years and hopefully come out and be happier, with better jobs, etc. I would say to those people that it is not going to work that way.

2 years ago I was working at a gym. Had I decided to go back to school (I could have gone to NYU - a top 10 biz school - family went there and I know the Prez of the university, plus I am a disabled veteran), I would be nowhere near whwere I am today.

You have to ask yourself what tyou really want. Will an MBA get you there? A law degree? I doubt it.

Well, technically as the humidty, temperature, and pressure changes, the violin will go out of tune.
If you track its changes and then the following weather patterns over time, you could actually use the violin to predict the weather.

But the predictions wouldn't be too fat into the future, they would really be in terms of "within the next few hours, it will rain" sorts of things.

That said, I agree that unless you are going to Harvard, MIT, UPenn, Stanford, etc for business school - then don't bother.

I have an MIS degree..

I enjoy life too much to go back and spend all that time getting my Masters now...

Just not worth it to me and where I want to go in my career to spend that much time away from my family, even part time..

I don't know what I could do in the next two years that would advance me to where I think I could be with an MBA.

You said you are where you are at because of who you knew/know. I'm not doubting that you work hard and are driven...you've proven that you are. I'm just saying not everyone has the contacts they need to advance.

It's true that I owe a lot of my opportunity to a guy I met in the gym. It;s also true that everything in life is making an impact with people.

As much as it sucks, even at the highest levels of wealth and power, people - flawed, stupid, biased are still in charge.

everyone's situation is different. But everyoen is going to see through an MBA if you don;t have the brainpower to back it up, and everyone is going to see the brainpower, MBA or no.

Having the brainpower and having the ability to sell yourself are 2 different things....and I lack that latter.

Also, to touch on what bignate said about owning your own business....i do....albeit small, it is the biggest pain in the ass and causes me more stress and headaches than anything I have ever had to deal with. It directly effects my family in a negative manner.....the money it brings in is not worth it. I could not see myself as a large business owner.....only if I am the only one I have to worry about.

You bring up some very vaild points. Just curious, but what type of business do you own? I could be wrong, but from the sound of it, it seems like you are self-employed rather than a business owner...according to Robert Kiyosaki at least.

Unfortunately, at the company I work for, a degree is a foot in the door and experience is a plus. I work for the CIO and he doesn't have a MBA...yet. I don't see the value in it for him because he has a solid track record and quite the reputation and experience. Basically, most companies just want to know that you can be disciplined enough for long enough to jump through the hoops to get that piece of paper. IMO, once you're "in" your performance means more to them.
