Alcohol

I love beer. I love alcohol.

I'm serious about losing weight and I'm TRYING to eat right. I'm hitting the gym and running almost every day.

But when the weekends come, or when my friends come over, it's so hard to resist the beer. How bad is it to consume beer?

See, I've given up the Pizza Hut and the fast food and all the oily and fried shit I love. But I can't give up the beer. I used to drink about 10 a night 5 nights a week (did that for 5 years.) Then I got down to about 20 beers a week for 2 years.

Now I only drink about once a week or once every two weeks (about 6-8 beers a session). SO now I don't drink much but at times I just want one beer in the evening.

So how 'bad' is it for me to have just a beer every other night. Not 2 beers, not every night. I just feel like my time in the gym is wasted if I do that.............damn this must be what it's like to quit smoking.

its pretty bad bro.... its gonna take you a helluva lot longer to get where u wanna be if u keep drinkin that shit. drink water instead :p

Beer is probably one of the worst things you can drink if you're trying to lose weight, even the light stuff.

One beer every other night? Come on man. No one does that. If by some miracle you were able to limit it to that, yes, it would be much better than drinking what you're drinking now.

But it's real simple. If you're really as serious as you say you are, the beer's gotta go. I suggest you don't tease yourself with this one beer every other day shit. Go all or nothing.

If you find it that hard to give up beer, it may be an indication of a larger problem.

I can't say how it is for you, but when the time came for me to get serious about my health and fitness, going to the gym religiously, eating right, doing cardio, I continued to drink beer, even though I knew it was counter-productive to my weight loss goals. I justified it by saying to myself that I work in a high pressure environment, and I just needed it to blow off steam. I rationalized that since it was just beer, it wasn't that big a deal. I resolved myself to eating less at dinner so I could fit those beers in under my calorie limit.

This went on for quite a while, and even though I was healthy in every other way, I couldn't shake the craving for beer. Then came the day that I realized that I had a problem. When normal folks are trying to lose weight and get healthy, and they decide that includes giving up beer, they do it. It's not a big deal. They know they have to stop and they do.

That's not how it was for me, and I realized that I needed help. I had a desire to stop and, as I found out later, that's all it takes. I was able to give up beer, and all alcohol for that matter, with the help of a group of people who had similar problems.

If you need more information, don't hesitate to email. Best of luck.

I agree with what treebeard said...it sounds like you have a problem...if you CAN NOT live without beer, it is something you need help for. If you need it to relax or whatever, there are many other stress relievers out there...sex is my favorite!

Been down that road man........

I had a problem not too long ago actually. Got tired of waking up feeling like that. Blackouts....fuck I don't even want to remember it...

If you're serious about your goals.....its gotta go. Period.
No "I wish" "If only". You don't need it.

Take it from an older bro......

I try to limit my binge drinking to once every week or two weeks also. And when I have a beer or two on a regular night that seems fine and I just figure it into my alloted calories for the day. I usually will take it out of my carbs--so a regular beer has like 140 calories and that means that's 35 grams less of carbs I'll consume that day. Not optimal for growth etc but I feel if I go all out all the time I get burnt out and that's worse.

Well, the bad thing about beer is that your body burns alcohol for energy before carbs. The good thing about it is that your body won't store it as glycogen. As soon as your body burns the alcohol, it should return to its normal activities.

At any rate, drinking and dieting do not mix. No offense, but you need to get your priorities straight. Do you want to drink, or do you want to be healthy.

Man, all you guys are right. I guess it's more of a social thing for me. Physically, I do well without it. I don't need it as a physical addiction, but I feel I need it in an emotional or social way.

I think I've been lying to myself for the past 7 months of trying to lose weight. I had (have) a lot of ways to justify alcohol. I can figure it into my calories and find other ways to drink...but I guess I just need to choose my priorities.

I'd SOOO much rather be in shape that even having fun with my friends at a bar, but that's a distant goal to me that seems almost unreachable, although rationally, I know it isn't.

Zebo put it best:

"If you're serious about your goals.....its gotta go. Period.
No "I wish" "If only". You don't need it."

And ccc, if I could smoke like you suggest I get hanged! I live in Singapore!

Thanks you guys.

I think it all depends on what your goals are.....obviously if you are trying to put on a lot of muscle and are serious about bodybuilding, then yeah it should go. But if your the kinda person who just wants to stay in good shape, and look good and lean I don't think a night or two of drinking a week is gonna keep you from that. I'm the kind of guy who wants to stay defined, 10% bodyfat is fine with me. I'm 22 so going out and having fun is still important to me. I can't give up the partying completely yet. So I try and balance it out. I know I won't be 5-6% bodyfat and huge while I'm still in my partying years, but 10% with a good amount of muscle does just fine for going out partying and hookin up with hot girls.

Me too . . . and actually I have found that beer is good for you - it makes us smarter!! Hear me out . . .

Consider a herd of buffalo. That herd is as only as stong and as fast as its weakest member of the herd. Now, when a predator attacks the herd, it is the slowest and weakest buffalo that get killed thus leaving the remaing herd faster and stronger.
This is also similar to our brain. Our brain is as strong and fast as its weakest brain cell. So, when we drink beer, it kills the weakest and slowest brain cell, which in turn makes us smarter!

;)

patro, i have never heard of being hung for smoking grass:mad: that is fu@cked up. You can literally die from a night of drinking, but that is a-okay. Oh well, but try giving up drinking and you will notice your results coming allot quicker. This will give you a new kind of "buzz" that is a bunch more satisfying that beer. take care

ccc-

Well, ok, they won't HANG you just for having a joint, but you'll be in some deep shit and possibly get caned. But if you have like an ounce or something, or even half an ounce, it would be considered trafficking and you better get ready for the noose.

You're right. You can die from a night of drinking. Alcohol makes you do so much stupid shit that weed will never make you do. I know....I'm just waiting for that new kind of "buzz" you were talking about....thanks

Hmmmmm different strokes.....

In Islamic literature, alcohol is clearly and stictly prohibited. Strangely, Isamic literature has no comment on marijuana or tobacco......so many, many islamic males smoke cigarettes and joints without any feelings of religious or cultural guilt. In other words, some factions of Islam WILL hang you for boozing, but will join you for a joint!!!!

All I'm saying is that your perception of the legality, health or spiritual aspects of alcohol, marijuana (and other drugs) is purely cultural.

And of course you can justify any of your actions......

Save your beer drinking for your cheat day. But the other days continue to follow your diet. Once you reach your goals you will be able to drink your beer any day of the week that you want, if you still desire to do that.

As the others already said : don't drink beer....

but if you really have to drink alcohol you'd better take red wine

Alcohol is fairly large quantities is extremely detrimental to bodybuilding efforts.

I have written an article on the subject, though only the first half, which just covers the basic science, is up. The 2nd half, which looks at its effects on bodybuilding will be in next month's issue, so you might look for it.

If you are still indecisive, I think it might sway you.

Well, tonight I find out if I can handle it...it's been 3 weeks without a drop of alcohol, which is a record for me. But there's a going away party tonight for a friend...maybe I can stay off it. For me, even a sip will destroy me. One sip will lead to one chug, then the beer will be gone, and I'll be ordering more.

Thanks for all your help and advice about alcohol.

And MS, that's only in really strict Muslim cultures. My girlfriend is Muslim and she drinks...it's ok. It's the same as like Mormons drinking. They won't really do anything to you if you DO drink, but it's looked down upon....but then again, Mormons don't smoke!
